Hey remember a couple months ago when I almost died from sleep apnea and begged y'all to be checked if you have symptoms of sleep apnea? Eric Bauza just died from sleep apnea. We were the same age. Don't ignore sleep apnea.

Do you get a full night's sleep but wake up feeling like death? Does your whole body feel off in ways you can't explain? Research signs of Sleep Apnea. Get a sleep test. You can't diagnose it yourself, cuz you sleepin'.

I think my ability to distinguish between "I am feeling weirdly anxious and low today" and "I am just a person having a totally normal reaction to being alive during the 2020s" might have completely vanished.

Unified Theory of Pam (“in any human field of endeavor, there will be a single person—Pam—miraculously holding things together, and if anything happens to Pam, we are hosed”) remains undefeated

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

The main way the LLM boom has affected my life is to make a lot of things so much harder. It makes information filtering an even more constant grinding process than it already was: it's noticeably worsened search info quality and makes it harder to find anything reliable and/or human and/or real.

Fascinating account showing how a false claim can become widely accepted (and propagated by multiple independent sources) as a result of a common academic shortcut: citing a source you haven't actually read after seeing it cited by another source: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

there really is something to being in the presence of 60.000 other people, knowing that all of them came together here because we believe that a better future is possible and that this future starts now

Ah, frustrating conversations with web hosting customer support. At this point it's almost nostalgic. Almost.

I saw someone say they needed AI to write their passive aggressive reply mails. And man, couldn't be me.

This picture will always be iconic. RIP Margaret Hamilton who wrote the software that successfully guided NASA’s Apollo missions through the moon.

"Money, again, has often been a cause of the delusion of multitudes. (...) To trace the history of the most prominent of these delusions is the object of the present pages. Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds (...)" -- Charles Mackay (1841)

Mackay’s 1841 classic EXTRAORDINARY POPULAR DELUSIONS might be worth re-reading amidst all the frenzied ‘AI is the future’ rhetoric, as this excerpt from the introduction shows

Moral panics are manufactured concerns created to push an agenda, don't hold up under scrutiny, and the fallout always harms more people than will ever be helped. Stand up for trans people.

Micah@rincewind.run

stand up for trans people: it is the right thing to do and it just will not hurt you, not now, not in this environment and maybe folks can start to relearn that trans people are pretty fucking cool, actually

it is nearly impossible for new artists, animators, or programmers to share their work without a swath of people accusing it of being AI. the only way to avoid that is to have proof that your project existed before gen AI. i think this ignorance ultimately helps normalize AI more than anything.

sorry, but torturing the omelas kid is just a smart move, polling-wise. i personally wish there wasn't a kid in the omelas hole--of course i do!--but let's not get distracted by purity tests, here.

it was so crucial for the web that people could look at and learn the html and eventually css behind the sites they visited, and so crucial that all you needed was notepad. losing that while also losing the basic knowledge of how computers and filesystems work has been a total disaster for all of it

Friends, I think Ghent University should hear from us as the eugenicists are out in full force. We got one. Let's talk about this. Google "Edward Hopper the Dory" real quick. Two things will turn up. This, and a picture of a boat. Now check the dictionary to find out what a dory is.

Finally. Apparently just being a racist trying to legitimize other racists wasn't enough.

Nathan Cofnas, who started the ball rolling with plagiarism allegations against Jason Arday, claims he has been suspended by the University of Ghent

Also throwing rector De Sutter under bus even though she didn't interfere when he was hired is so typical. Goes to show that when you defend these types because of 'scientific neutrality' you will reap what you sow.

We're doing a huge disservice to kids (and young adults) by shielding them from everything that might be 'too hard' or 'too difficult'. They can figure that out for themselves, challenge is good!

Chewing my arm off, bloody foam speckling my lips, screaming. Just screaming, forever.

btw I read The Lord of the Rings when I was 12. Obviously not a children's book, and I did miss a lot of the nuance, but I could read it.
