You love to see it

I've always believed Oxford Street could be so much more than a road. Today we begin a new chapter as the nation’s high street goes traffic free, creating a place where people can spend time, enjoy the atmosphere and experience the very best of our city.

(whilst acknowledging that the fact that it's taken until now to pedestrianise the capital's most famous shopping street is frankly shameful)

Inspired by @edjefferson.com's excellent Local Wiki, I made a version where you can see where everything is on the map: www.neil-scott.com/localwiki/

Had this idea in lockdown, half-built it, forgot about it, remembered it again, though might as well finish it.

This is really making me think that teaching those skills like we've started doing is the most critical intervention. Any design or research education that doesn't teach explicitly about power is lacking because both design and research require engagement, if not full struggle, with power.

Absolutely peak autumn out there today. Got the kids to do the classic 'find me a leaf of every colour' challenge to liven-up the morning dog walk 🍂🍁

My favourite bit of the advert; "Don't meet every criterion? We'd still love to hear from you. We're a learning organisation, and we'll support you to build the skills and experience you need... some of our most capable colleagues at EST didn't tick every box when they applied either" (see: me!)

New blog: there are rumours swirling that the Warm Homes Plan and particularly the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (the heat pump subsidy) will be cut in the Budget. Scrapping it would be a disastrous decision, leaving UK climate and energy policy in disarray www.nesta.org.uk/blog/four-re...

We're so back. NHS upgraded me to a lighter, moulded mini-splint, and the hospital hand expert - that's THE expert on hands in Edinburgh - said I had "good hands"

Jonty@fairless.xyz

JONTY used HAND! It's not very effective... Cleverly managed to dislocate my thumb and tear some important hand meat this weekend, and now it's Monday and I have to do my email job. Oh no.

While absolutely not scientific & deserving of a graph... versions of this slide have served me well when trying to convince stakeholders that a qual study doesn't need 50 interviews to offer 'valid insights'.

*Extreme narrowcasting warning* Y'all ever spent an evening preloading the bearing stacks in a 1970s BMW wheel hub, juggling a blow torch, a freezer, tubs of grease, 1.2m of string, a fish scale, & a pile of tiny 0.05mm shims, and think "y'know what, maybe this DID belong on the scrapheap"? #motosky

Problem: I got paid money to charge my car earlier in the week when it was windy. Solution: I've got the (non-agile) neighbours' car over and am gonna spend the next 7 hours charging theirs. They get a free 300 mile charge, i make £s, and we all help balance the grid.

Tomorrow, between 1am and 9am, we'll be paid to use electricity. Our home battery will charge itself automatically for use later in the day. Probably not worth me staying up all night to bake bread 🤣 - but it does go to show how the green energy transition is accelerating.

Being energy savvy and having a bunch of price-sensitive automations running on your home server makes you Cool and Popular, actually, contrary to what my wife and children think

Inflation hits 3.1%. Energy price cap about to go up to £1723. And some scary predictions of where energy costs might go next year (see next tweet). Foodbanks already see too many people pushed to the brink. We’ll need targeted support to protect people already facing hunger.

The urge to post 'sickos.jpg' is strong. But then I remember that you and I live in this economy, and this is millions of people's pensions going down the toilet. The stock market’s immediately realizing that “slowing down AI” is code for buying few GPUs and memory chips. The only bright spot in the economy is about to take a hit if the frontier labs actually follow through.

Recently I've been struggling to help a couple of internal research teams communicate recommendations clearly. Today I finally read the old doteveryone guide @jukes.ie recommends and... Damn. It's the best thing I've ever read. Tempted to print off 20 copies and scatter them around the office...

Alright. I reckon this project is done. Full teardown and rebuild from the crankshaft up, taking this leaky, lumbering 46yo ex-police bike and turning it into a tight, responsive daily rider. Pretty happy with that.

Climbed Calton Hill to see out Emii Alrai's 'Guardian'. A colossal fragmented relic of maybe an ancient Sumerian Lamassu. It's good, actually.
