With AI companies illegally scraping the entire history of human intellectual & creative output, putting everyone out of jobs... It'll be fascinating when we realize Universal Basic Income (UBI) is reparations for the largest theft of human labor in history that destroyed our ability to find work.

Charlie reposted

Another under-discussed aspect of UBI is it will empower workers. It'll be much harder for employers to get away with poor employee treatment when they have a safety net allowing them to quit jobs that mistreat them.

Y'all, I'm pissed. I have moderate / severe MECFS (like long COVID but I've had it since 2012). I could really do with not getting COVID again. But, I can't work, can't afford a vaccine, and no-one even knows if MECFS is immune system related due to piss poor research funding

If anyone ever figures out what MECFS is, then I'd be able to say whether I qualify under immune system issues. But we get no fucking funding. And the funding we do get focuses on psychology, because apparently it's all in our heads (God knows they're not looking anywhere else)

And now, if you'll excuse me, I had to get dressed and leave the flat for half an hour to find out I won't be protected from further disability, so now I obviously need to sleep for at least three hours. Fuck my life.

That’s the charitable version of the story, where the lads have been acting out of pure, non-ideological cynicism and opportunism to smash stomp down upon various minority groups and the left. It doesn’t take into account: a lot of these people *are part of* resurgent fascism or riding its coattails

Charlie reposted

The major story of the last decade is the resurgence of overt racist hatred and fascism, on a specific platform of removing the civil rights of citizens, and deporting them where possible. The British press has - at best - used this opportunity to hammer the fuck out of everyone it’s always despised

Funny, isn't it. I can't see this policy announcement at the top of the BBC news homepage. Whereas the big Reform Ltd announcement on Monday was all over their news...

Imagine, we could wind up with a dumb Match of the Day format with journos repeating government’s key messages and commentating on who’s up and who’s down, occasionally joining in propaganda campaigns for obviously disastrous policies and helping them stomp all over anyone they hate and want to harm

"To gain compliance from combative individuals" is such a nice way of saying "to brutalize people fighting for their lives into submission."

Good. Now we need action. Tax fossil fuel giants to pay for firefighting helicopters. A cool space in every community. A maximum working temperature. And no new oil and gas extraction in the North Sea. We cannot negotiate with the science. www.bbc.co.uk/weather/arti...

Climate breakdown isn't just costing lives, it's scorching our economy. We need to redesign our economy for a hotter climate, and make oil and gas firms pay.

Reform’s leaders peddle rhetoric around climate change denial. Their councils act on it. Last month, Reform-run Suffolk County Council scrapped its climate emergency declaration. Now, as a wildfire tears through the county, we are seeing exactly why climate action should not be abandoned.

Email me at southyorkscrossrail@gmail.com if this sounds interesting! Let's build better regional / commuter rail with the Burnham bucks!

@garethdennis.uk You might recognise this map! If you like the idea, I'd love a boost (Tried sending you an email but the address on your website bounced. Is there a better address to use?)

So Ann Widdecombe appears to have died violently. Fuck violence. But also, fuck Ann Widdecombe.

violent public threats towards trans women? Remember how many people are in prison for holding signs or joining zoom calls regarding Palestine Action despite legal multiple legal resolutions showing how legally dubious Labour’s authoritarianism is? Think they’ll receive any compensation?

Charlie reposted

How dare the slightest nod towards actual justice be made towards violent bigots? Remember the constant calls for disabled people to be left to starve to buy more weapons, and yet £25k of public money goes to compensate a bigot for the slightest possibility he might be *investigated* for making

For anyone not keeping up, Graham Linehan has been rewarded with £25K for calling for the public to "punch [trans women] in the balls".

Nigel Farage has called a “people vs the establishment” by-election in Clacton. He’s framing himself as the plucky outsider taking on the Westminster machine. Let’s talk about what “the establishment” actually means and what it doesn’t

View full thread

And now he’s been terrible at the actual job of being an MP. So rather than learn how to do the work, the slow, unglamorous, painstaking work of democratic governance, he’s doing what a child does when they can’t figure out a Jenga tower

So he’s just pulling the whole thing down and pretending that’s the point. It’s not anti-establishment, it’s anti-democracy. And that’s a very different thing /end

He’s not fighting the establishment. He’s fighting accountability. And the reason he’s so good at this framing is because he’s genuinely never had to do the actual work of governance. He’s a media operator, not a legislator

Here’s the thing I keep coming back to: he spent 20 years in the European Parliament. And what did he do there? He didn’t pass laws. He didn’t build coalitions. He didn’t negotiate. He performed. He showed up, gave a speech, got the clip, and left. He was terrible at the actual job of being an MEP

The trick he’s pulling is conflating “the establishment” with established rules and procedures that apply to everyone. You know, rules about declaring donations. Rules about standards in public life. The boring procedural stuff that exists precisely because without it, power goes entirely unchecked

Those rules aren’t the establishment keeping the little guy down. They’re guardrails. They’re what stops a system from becoming pure patronage and graft. And Farage is currently facing investigations over £5m in undeclared donations from a crypto billionaire, plus money from a convicted fraudster

Nigel Farage has called a “people vs the establishment” by-election in Clacton. He’s framing himself as the plucky outsider taking on the Westminster machine. Let’s talk about what “the establishment” actually means and what it doesn’t

Farage went to Dulwich College, a private school. Then he studied at LSE, one of the most elite universities in the world. Then he worked in the City as a metal trader. Then he spent 20 years as an MEP. Then he became an MP. Then he resigned two years in to force a by-election

This is not an outsider. This is someone who has spent his entire adult life inside the institutions of power. The only thing he’s never done is actually govern, which is a very different thing from being elected to a debating chamber

We talk about “the Overton Window” and I do not think you will find a time in living memory when the goalposts of political acceptability were quite so forcefully yanked up, dragged rightwards and rammed back into the earth *by our political and media elite, in their own interest*, than our own era.
