Yes, this is a real worry. Among many.

If they lose power, expect Republicans in several states to strip powers from incoming Democrats, pass voting restrictions, and new gerrymanders. They did it after losing governors races in NC in 2016 and 2024, MI and WI in 2018, and KY in 2019. They preemptively did it ahead of losing IA this year

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

Abdul El-Sayed is the real deal. Tommy—bless him—is not a bad guy on this showing, he's just a dumb white guy who's been spending too much time on X and Truth Social.

More evidence to the fact, that Trump is driving a deeply-rooted pro-Putin agenda. This is not collateral damage of a confused president, this is this presidency's strategic intent in foreign policy.

Latest piece (mostly free). The great Graham-Blumenthal con comes to an end. This bill was never going to hurt Russia or help Ukraine. Trump just made that explicit. Shame on those who pretended otherwise. phillipspobrien.substack.com/p/trump-prot...

what I hope this thread makes clear is two things: 1. expanding the court has real problems, and these are valid concerns 2. there are no good options left, and this is the best of the bad ones unless we want to accept a conservative supermajority for the rest of our lives

In the latest RUSI Commentary, Professor Derrick Wyatt KC argues that Europe should start “talking over Putin’s head” to his potential successors, offering a political and economic reset in return for a just peace for Ukraine.

This. We've reached the point we're at now (the 'we're no longer even pretending' phase) because one side of politics has—by questionable means—incrementally ratcheted the wheel in its own favor without a single elbow thrown in reply. And still some Dems are unwilling to go there.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

FWIW, I refer to this as "closing the hardball gap." It's the idea that asymmetric adherence to norms is itself destablizing, and that norm-breaking can/should be done in democracy's defense. This is a bit dated but it gets at the basic point:

Things got more insane just about as soon as I posted this last night. DHS is now arguing that we cannot even put the names of ICE officers in our lawsuit against those officers. Their position is that, if a defendant works for DHS, they cannot be named in a lawsuit. Never seen anything like it.

Jared@jaredmcclain.bsky.social

It's been a struggle for reporters to get DHS to provide the names of officers who violate people's civil rights. Now, in our case against DHS's construction-site raids, the government is arguing in court that its employees names are "confidential" and should not be made public during litigation.

The administration keeps telling us that ICE is in our cities to make us all feel safe, but if they're goons in plainclothes bum rushing vehicles with guns and pounding on the windows, how exactly does that make anyone feel safe?

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

The NYPD just released surveillance video of the ICE shooting (which occurred off camera). Two men in civilian clothes run up to a car with guns drawn. One second later, one man begins smashing the butt of his gun into the driver’s side window. The driver appears to panic and hit the gas.

The takeaway from Bo French suggesting Asian students are “foreigners” and the tepid GOP response is that the Trump-era Republican Party is increasingly explicit about its belief that the only good immigrants, and the only real Americans, are white. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
