Almost historian, full-time podcast listener🎙️ Writing on military history, US and EU politics, and videogames while preaching the defeat of Putin's regime🇺🇦
People abroad don't understand the level of interference Meta & bots had in these elections.
5 days before the election a far-right politician posted a fake news video that got 157 MILLION views on Instagram in 24hs.
For reference, GTA 6's reveal trailer got 90 million views on YouTube in 24hs.
The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.
"A belief in military force as the sole ingredient for success has enabled a lazy and destructive foreign policy that ignores the will and motivations of both allies and adversaries. Such thinking also elevates tactics above strategy." Great piece by @jkdemp.bsky.social
“The communications backbone for an entire country’s military has gone down and nobody knows who is responsible”
Yeah we’re gonna need to send people to prison and start nationalizing things.
"The idea that tactical or operational victories can be translated into a situation of ‘winning’ without the imposition of a strategic defeat is very problematic."

One of the lesser-known fantastical creatures I talked about last week at @laworldcon.bsky.social was the bonnacon. It appears in medieval bestiaries as a bull-like creature with horns curved back on themselves and therefore useless to protect itself. Instead, it expels flaming poop in defense.
And you are *absolutely* not supposed to ask how they got that big. Just always was that way, I guess.
By contrast, as an American, the reason the USA is really big is that we did a bunch of imperialism and settler colonialism, which was bad.
There is somehow a prevailing school of thought amongst both tankies and really serious think tank guys that China and Russia being geographically large is a fundamental law of the universe and any deviation from that risks consensus reality as a whole
The US Navy is working to rename an aircraft carrier under construction that was set to honor a Black sailor hailed for his heroic actions during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and there have been internal conversations about renaming it to honor President Trump, sources say. https://cnn.it/4hFq6a6
It is my professional opinion as a highly educated expert on national security matters that this could be a sign of low morale. Be sure to like and follow for more insightful content.
Criminologists study crime, epidemiologists study plagues, biologists study cancers. None of them want more of that bad stuff to occur.
But some folks somehow assume that academics who study war must be rampant warmongers?! 🤷
Tune in - I'll be on tomorrow (6/11) at noon EDT with @flintdibble.bsky.social to talk about the rise of simplistic, right-wing 'chud classics' on Twitter - their thumbless grasp of antiquity and the odious ideology that sits behind it.

I realize one is not supposed to say this in politics, but it is just clearly the case that 77,302,580 voters have blood on their hands for this, bear real, moral culpability for deciding that it was a good idea to put idiot Fox News Grandpa back in power for [reasons].
I'm wondering what the oldest work I can think of that I can point at and say, "look, introspection in an individualist way!"
Maybe the Epic of Gilgamesh with Gilgamesh's self-doubt and concern with mortality? That gets me to c. 2000 BC and I don't know a lot of anything older than that.
"This probably sounds like nightmare fuel to many, but to wealthy VCs and AI and crypto entrepreneurs it’s the next gold rush." is the quote of our time

Europeans think all the random loot in Fallout is because of a nuclear war but America is just like that. Yesterday, I found a rocket launcher looking for my phone charger.
🇬🇧 February 7, 1992: Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Greece, the United Kingdom and Ireland sign the Treaty on European Union (TEU), better known as the Maastricht Treaty

It's 410 CE, and I'm your podcast host, Rossus Douthaticus. I'm here with Alaric the Visigoth, who recently sacked the Eternal City.
Alaric, why do you think people have lost faith in Rome? Is it a crisis of liberalism? Is it because of the feminization of the workplace?

You can all just quit your jobs. I want you to remember that. You don't have to go try and do pointless stooge shit in a city that already hates you more than you've ever hated anything and will sniff you out as diaper baby cowards before your rental van gets over the Ben Franklin Bridge.
But isn’t that what you’d expect a politician to say publicly? That’s the standard diplomacy, it’s what happens now in closed meetings that counts. I’m sure all European & NATO countries are making plans & agreements for the future without saying something publicly that shortens the timeline
I mean, functionally, as bad as congressional Dems have been - and they've been awful, Schumer and Jeffries particularly - there is simply no mechanism by which we can force this man from office without Republican officeholders deciding he has crossed a line
they have zero lines, none
it's bad!
it has never been more clear that Trump's "I could shoot someone on fifth avenue and lose no votes" statement is true, at least when it comes to congressional support
apparently it also applies to "invade greenland" and I don't really know where we go from there
US Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent:
What I am urging everyone here to do is sit back, take a deep breath, and let things play out. The worst thing countries can do is escalate against the United States.
Sharp points from @polphilpod.bsky.social on the basic error that centrists made in overreacting to meaning of Trump 2024 win. Dovetails w/my argument that folks didn't appreciate the latent solidarity with immigrants felt by many ordinary people (see below)
www.liberalcurrents.com/liberalism-d...
Yes. My theory of the moment is Miller/Vance thought their view that immigrants threaten social solidarity would be widely shared. But ICE raids are driving native-born Americans to show solidarity with immigrants quite courageously. Now Miller is trying to disrupt that alliance with state violence.
It used to be that the United States would use Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty to transmit truth across the borders of repressive regimes.
Now the work of American reporters, having been censored, is being smuggled across the border to reach Americans.
Anyway, between the formatting, the writing style and the open white supremacist ideology ("We want Europe to remain European...") you can tell that Pete Hegseth stayed up really late and wore out more than a few crayons writing it.
You can also tell that from the whisky stains.
In 2000, Putin was looking for closer co-operation with the EU. Now he claims for Russia the status of a unique civilisational power & a hegemon in the territory of the former Soviet Union.
