@matt-levine.bsky.social is joking but I do wonder if this feature—“collateral cant be repoed if it is in outer space, thus putting it there gives me leverage”—could be driving the orbital data center thing. Musk has already defeated securities regs and shareholder democracy, why not the UCC too?

"I guess if you take a lien on the chips as collateral, and then SpaceX blasts them into an undisclosed location 'somewhere in the universe,' you will have a hard time repossessing them, but SpaceX has an investment-grade rating so it’s probably fine." www.bloomberg.com/opinion/news...

It is exactly the kind of idea a megalomaniac who is determined to put himself beyond the reach of all constraints and who owns a rocket company might have while on drugs and hey there whaddayaknow

We need recall elections for senators so badly

Gavin Newson sucks ass and it’s important people know that but let’s please not let the utterly dysfunctional California legislature—who have literally not overridden a governor’s veto since 1979–off the hook. Do your jobs.

We gotta have recall elections for senators. 6 years is way too long for a politician to go without having to face voters

VoteHub@votehub.com

NEWS — At TribFest, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) appears to misspeak, calling himself a “lifelong Republican,” and declines to commit to being the “51st Democrat” if Democrats win the majority. “Let’s revisit after the midterms, and let’s see what happens if I happen to be 51.”

the paramount/warner antitrust suit could have done serious damage to this man’s empire and I will not stop being furious at everyone in california politics who caved on it

“Oracle officers and directors are forbidden from pledging company shares as collateral for personal loans, with one exception, Larry Ellison… The total stock pledged now represents about 36% of Ellison’s total holdings of 1.16 billion shares.”

Trump 2 is the first administration in my lifetime that—in addition to being unbelievably corrupt itself—is openly, inarguably pro-corruption as a major policy position. It would be cool if this were covered with, oh, even like a quarter of the urgency that the “border crisis” did under the last guy

ProPublica@propublica.org

Sen. Susan Collins helped steer millions in federal defense contracts to Navatek, whose CEO illegally funneled thousands of dollars to her campaign. The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers. Then Trump gutted the unit in charge. THREAD 🧵

A sitting US Congresswoman of a major state, endorsed by her Governor and the Senator she sought to replace, was beat in her Senate primary by a guy who had never won any elected office at any level, despite outspending him by 9:1. A result that would have been genuinely unimaginable 10 years ago.

would love to see this dipshit try to perform the “most normie, bluepilled, centrist opinions” he can think of lmao “Uh, uh, and I think immigration can be OK actually, like it’s not even that bad as people say because like someone has to pick the lettuce right?” wow dude how did she ever clock you

the new right makes men *undisguiseably* repellent then frames that as women's fault

Silicon Valley got rich on the insight that a 1% chance at $1bn is worth $10m. Then they realized that this logic could apply to much larger numbers, and that once a sucker’s money hits your account it doesn’t matter if you actually have a 1% chance or not…prompting them all to lose their minds.

this is, in a very real sense, the most correct post of all time, insofar as it captures the full essence of Officially Sanctioned Reality

A corporate scene where founders are incentivized to make the wildest lies they can think of to attract big valuations and where investors are incentivized to go along with it bc being in on unicorns is more important than avoiding frauds will very quickly develop a bad relationship with the truth!

President Obama once delivered a speech in an open field for four hours during a thunderstorm while leaning against a very tall, pointy metal pole. President Trump should do the same, but for six hours, to demonstrate his strength.

Lol

People love to say shit like this as if Gaza and the threat to democracy are separate issues. They’re not. Palestine is the proving ground for the tactics the fascists want to employ here to militarize our border, conduct their ethnic cleansing, and crush domestic resistance to it.

Celebrating Independence Day by wearing a patriotic outfit (a French soccer jersey designed in statue of liberty colors) in the middle of Real America (the weekly farmers market located in the historically gay neighborhood of my dense, walkable coastal blue state city)

“moves him into a status of enrichment more associated with global strongmen” woah woah woah ease up there turbo you wouldn’t want to go TOO hard there now would you? If you’re not careful, your readers might get the idea that the President might be corrupt!

Huge fucking difference between trading old ass KG and Pierce for a boatload of pics and dumping your 29 year old team captain, heart of the city, and future President for a steroid using podcaster. I’m so pissed

FIFA has to reject a depiction of the founding of Haiti’s republic because the idea of enslaved people liberating themselves and gaining political self-determination is threatening to FIFA’s paymasters in the Gulf.

Another reminder: if there exists *any* class of people who don't have due process rights, then *nobody* actually has due process rights because the government can always just say you're in that class.

A US-born woman born was confronted by sheriff deputies in Louisiana who were convinced her ID and social security card were fakes. They turned her over to ICE, who shackled her & took her an hour away. Even after a lawyer convinced ICE of the woman's citizenship the sheriff says they did no wrong
