A student confessed that they produced an essay draft with AI, but that they had intended to revise it later so that it would "sound like" them, and therefore they intended to do right. I feel as though I have failed this person so so utterly. What a work "sounds like" has no bearing on its value.

They automated our walking, and we grew weak. They automated our growing and we grew fat. They automated our singing and we went silent. They automated our loving and we've gone lonely. Language is thought, and thought is language. When they automated our language, we have NOTHING LEFT.

This is why a human brain can learn calculus and cribbage and baseball and disco dancing all on about 20 watts of power. Graziano’s attention schema is a practical engineering description of that power-efficient reality. It’s a non mystical and yet totally persuasive explanation of consciousness.

The LLMs are an extremely impressive brute force imitation of consciousness. But I think Graziano’s theory suggests they are structurally incomplete. Nilay’s description of how impressive a child falling down the stairs is perfectly captures the problem.

When I think about Graziano’s theory, and the current AI work, I think the key is that a conscious being can effectively “update its own weights”. Or rather, children are training and deployed at the same time. LLMs are basically frozen after training, whereas a person can always learn more.

Remember “bread machines”? They were a purpose built stand mixer/oven combo. You dumped in all the ingredients, and the machine mixed, kneaded, proofed and baked. But every loaf came out the exact shape of the machine, with the mixing paddle shoved up the ass of the loaf. Anyway, AI and your brain.

I’m overwhelmed by this. Why do the boring work of cultivating joy in your life when we’ve just invented heroin? Automate your happiness!

"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt." Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn? MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

Walking the line outside the Trump rally in Corinth, I was reminded that more unites us than divides us here in Mississippi. I heard from folks who want to get foreign money out of our elections, put an end to flock cameras, keep our border secure, and make sure our veterans are taken care of.

This. And if most Americans weren't aware of this in 2019, I'd guess they're even less so now. Public university students were paying for a third of the cost of their education in 2009, and it was up to half by 2019. 2009 wasn't great compared to the 60s-70s, either. www.pbs.org/newshour/edu...

This is why you will need national legislation. And more coherent legislation rather than one-time levies. But state efforts are critical because they put the topic into the conversation. And generally 'neener neener' isn't good messaging from the billionaire class.

The leader of the Republican Party supports murderous anti-American war criminal Vladimir Putin. Will Republican candidates be repeatedly asked if they denounce Putin? The Republican Party's biggest donor also boosts a German Neo-Nazi party. Will Republican candidates be asked if they denounce AfD?

A camp where people die as a consequence of policy decisions is a death camp. Neglect at scale is a policy decision. Disease and starvation were key components of The Holocaust.

A 56-year-old Mexican man held at a federal immigration facility in Laredo was found dead in his cell Saturday morning. His family says the center would not give him medicine for diabetes, high blood pressure and a heart condition. He is the 7th person to die in ICE custody in Texas this year.

At minimum, we can assume some critical distance and ask if “mecha hitler” might fundamentally problematize the discourse. Read some critical theory, interview some English Professors. Stop presuming only the rapist can opine on the rape.

And low key, the idea that X is a place where people are “optimistic” and “enthusiastic” about technology is just nauseous. Like it was MONDO 2000 or WIRED in 1995. It gives Albert Speer energy at this point. You have to report on it, but draw a line.

Just because a math equation stole the entire literary corpus doesn’t suddenly turn Shakespeare into Calculus. “Large Language” suggests that the Humanities has at least as much to say about all this. You can ask the mathematicians about the “Model” part.

Every skill decline study that shows how AIs erode you is an indictment of power itself. Think about how eroded and emaciated a CEO is, who never has to do anything they don’t want to do. Of course they love AI. They can’t even imagine what we’ve earned. They can’t see their own frailty.
