Republicans Don’t Know Ball Update: A hockey blogger asked the two Michigan Senate candidates for statements on the Red Wings. Rogers: blah blah Michigan loves the Red Wings El-Sayed: angry rant about how the cheap owners MUST pay Detroit’s young star defenseman octopusthrower.com/what-each-mi...

“I was there when the Devils swept in ‘95. We had 8 hall of famers on that Wings squad, but no answer for Neal Broten and Claude Lemieux. They also had this upstart goalie, Brodeur, who was pretty good. I never got over that.”

Ah yes, "coveted destination," the team that hasn't had a serious marquee free agent signing in years and whose recently-demoted captain is desperately trying to get out

Wikipedia editors care more about the topic than that. That read more like a blurb from one of those little tourist pamphlets in a cheap-ish hotel lobby.

In NC, we have a Dem candidate who parties with Brind'Amour, goes on local sports radio and opines with legitimate information/player stats, has had personal time with the Stanley Cup, etc. Our Republican candidate (from Michigan) got called out for being a poseur who can't name a single player.

I get it, not everyone follows hockey closely, but everyone I have ever met from Michigan views hockey like the all- consuming religion it is. If you grew up north of Indiana and don't follow hockey, that's a red flag, like dogs having a preternatural anger towards you.

OG After Dark had him on the mic after a Stanley Cup Final game. Coop knew his stuff, and was engaging/entertaining. Kind of wish they kept him on panel through the remainder of the show, he was legitimately informed/good.

“I was at the game when Darren McCarty took on Claude Lemieux" the flex, we are seeing unprecedented levels of flexion!

Of course you're going to see these levels of flexion from a man who takes questions in front of a rack that has both a cambered bar and a safety squat bar

tbf "I was at the game where Darren McCarty took on Claude Lemieux" is the Michigan version of Indiana's "I was at the 1990 State Finals where Damon Bailey beat Jamar Johnson" where approximately 725,000 people claim to have been there.

That is such a flex. I only was at a Wings/Habs preseason game in 1994. The only other time I was at JLA was for the 1995 CCHA Semifinals. AES was there for one of Hockeytown's most epic nights, the lucky bastard.

i went to bed every night as a kid listening to the wings on WJR and truly loved that era maybe more than i've ever loved any other sports team

Most fun I ever had at a sports bar was for the 2002 finals, cheering on the Hurricanes from AJ Gators in VA Beach. We wound up next to a table of red wings fans for game 1 and had such a good time giving each other shit we met up for the next 4 games and all watched together. Golden era of hockey.

It was also my first live hockey game. I remember my grandpa telling me to remember it since is was once in a lifetime to see that kind of game. After my last time at LCA though, I kinda wish I just kept the memories. Bad game and worse fans all around me; we got up and left after the first period.

Any name drop of Darren McCarty carries weight with Red Wings fans. My favorite gift I've ever gotten someone is a Darren McCarty Cameo video for my little brother for his 30th birthday a few years ago.

aw man, that's so cool. i always played as him in the EA Sports NHL game back when people still did things like "lock to one player"

feel fairly confident El-Sayed could draw up his favorite run concept if asked to do so. Seems like a BASH or Counter trey kinda guy

El-Sayed is absolutely enjoying the Chip Kelly offense at Northwestern, while calling for Tommy Carr to start over Bryce Underwood at Michigan.

El-Sayed seems to know exactly what is going on with the Red Wings. If anyone has watched a game recently they can see the empty stands. Gone straight downhill since Sr. Ilitch passed away. Mike Rogers doesn't know squat since they probably don't show those games in Florida.

We’ve had a losing record for the last 10 YEARS! We’re constantly missing the playoffs. But every year, tickets go up! Nosebleeds are $35! We have Larkin, DeBrincat, and Seider. BUT THEY NEED SUPPORT!!! El-Sayed is showing knowledge of the exact sort of issues we’re passionate about.

10 YEARS! We have basically no scouting core (notice how all our best players are from the Swedish Junior League)? We have no farm league system. And haven't had the same goalie for more than 3 years since 2016. It's fucking EMBARRASSING!

When Mike Rogers enjoys a Labatt* at a Hockey Town sports bar, he often thinks fondly of his Canadian friends who also enjoy hockey. And he gets sad when thinking about those darn tariffs, but whattayagonnado.

Missouri Senator and Virginia resident Josh Hawley once showed his cred by mentioning his favorite KC barbeque...a place on the Kansas side.

the edvinsson thing is extra stupid because they fired their GM during the offseason and didn't hire another one (the team is run by an interim GM) and this guy, without a contract, showed up to training camp and paid his own insurance to be there. now that they lowballed him he asked for a trade

Got to respect the call out of those peak Avs/Red Wings games. As an Avs fan, I really disliked the Red Wings back then. Now I would give a toe to experience that rivalry again.

Dragging Chris Ilitch during a political campaign is fucking amazing. Two billionaire sports owners basically control downtown. One’s building businesses and residences. The other owns parking lots and empty promises. One owns the Wings and Tigers. The other the Cavs. Guess which one is building

Yeah, it's up there. He's a three-sport captain in high school, lacrosse at both Michigan and Oxford. As his opponent, you're gonna have to cede sportsball to him. Oh, and maybe steer clear of health care issues too. Having the Ohio VP call the wolverine a weasel is basically campaign seppuku.

I hope he wins, but i do think the general racism of my fellow Michiganers will ultimatly usher in the carpet bagger. Here's hoping tho!

lol at Rogers' slop here. "A coveted destination" meanwhile the two biggest Wings stories are the former captain and Edvinsson (h/t to El-Sayed) demanding out of town. If you're going to lie about not being a Florida man, at least pick up a damned paper.

Isn’t this why you guys had Bush because people want a beer with him and that then led to Trump? You want representation that knows Sports… wouldn’t it be better if they understood the reason that Detroit’s economy has been a disaster for decades and why people don’t have clean water

Whose side are you taking here? Because Dr. El-Sayed has actually worked on lead elimination in Michigan. Don't you fucking dare compare Dr. El-Sayed, epidemiologist and Rhodes Scholar to the failson, lesser George Bush.

I’m on the side of people should vote for policies not whether a politician knows anything about a sports team. El-Sayed is the person I would want to win but not because he knows more about the Wings than the Pedo supporting Repug, but because he’s not a Pedo supporting Repug

More and better Democrats, in that order. Reading El-Sayed's wiki bio is exhausting, makes me wonder what I was doing with those years of my life. Being a home-town kid who knows about the home-town teams just rounds out the obscene C.V. A Buckeye VP call him a weasel is just batting practice.

A good chunk of American voters are complete cretins. Since Republicans win them with goofy stuff, the Democrats need to do the same. It would be much better if voters chose candidates based on good information about policies, but that is not the world we live in now.
