This is such a fantastic photo: "The Witches' Tea Party" but I want to use it to explain the origin of the tall, pointy witches hat. The real story of this photo: These are residents at the Hospital of the Holy & Undivided Trinity: an almshouse in Castle Rising, Norfolk, England established 1610.

An excellent, precient read, directly relevant to our situation today.

What do cheap drones, killer AI, kelvin waves and slopaganda have to do with the collapse of the Bronze Age? Work with me on this. 1177 BC has been on my mind as I watch global leaders ignoring or exacerbating a cascading series of very dangerous trends. substack.com/home/post/p-...

Finished watching Poldark (not before it left Netflix - but I have PBS Passport and it was Masterpiece Theater) and went, "I wanna know what happens next. Do the books go past this point?" Yes. There are *twelve* books in this series. bsky.app/profile/fyrd...

So I started watching Poldark this week (because my grandmother recommended the books years ago and it's leaving Netflix soon) and I'm really enjoying a costume drama with truly magnificent seascapes and also Aidan Turner brooding handsomely over his financial woes and the plight of the working man.

Not a one season to one book match, mind you, but it goes past the events of the show for at least another few books. Also I started the fifth book and got an author's note talking about writing the first four "many years ago" and then suddenly wanting more about these characters.

Had to check Wikipedia - first book published in *1945*, fourth by 1953, and then the fifth in *1973*. No wonder the show got really interesting in the third season - the author had 20 years more experience when he got to those books!

Next up in my occasional series: "Can it swim?" BATS!🦇🏊 As video captured by Rob Mackereth (@mack2526 on IG) in the Lake District, England shows, bats can indeed swim. In fact, they're pretty good little swimmers. But there's an asterisk. Also, standard disclaimer: do not handle downed bats!

When a nobleman came in to the tavern and put a note on the board, the monster hunters went to check it out. Laughter erupted. "A gazebo? Quick, someone get Eric!" Then the bounty caught their attention. "That's a lot of gold. Why?" "This gazebo," the nobleman said, "was made by Baba Yaga."

People keep suggesting works of fiction but like. That's what you give people to prevent pet vaccine hesitancy. If they're already hesitant, you show them actual videos of how hard a rabies death is for human beings.

Shepherd@neolithicsheep.bsky.social

If you have a rabies vaccine skeptic in your life, you should sit them down and show them videos of rabid animals. Start with wildlife and end with humans dying of rabies. Do it every day until they get a restraining order or vaccinate their pets

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

listen, I'm not saying that making private equity firms turbo-illegal would fix *everything* that's wrong with the world, but I am saying it'd be a good fucking start

So damned sick of all the calls I'm getting from scammers who think I'm my boomer mother. I answer them, because I'm curious and have no issues with hanging up on them in mid-sentence. Just stayed on the line with one making them think I was a genuine sale because I felt like wasting their time.

Now, the call I got 15 minutes before that one was a REAL scam, not just trying to sell me insurance. Claimed we had paid $150 in excess on our last electrical bill and was asking me for banking or credit info to send me a refund.

Still wondering what the deal is with the barrage of calls claiming to have unclaimed funds paying out on a car accident and then asking me if I've been in any kind of an accident within the last three years. Don't know how that was supposed to translate into them receiving money somehow.

This photo of bat-butt & twinkly bat-toes by Fernando Gual-Suárez reveals a mystery. Mexican free-tailed bats(Tadarida brasiliensis) have special spoon-shaped bristles on their toes. During an attempt to trace the movements of bat colonies with a fluorescent dye, a UV light showed 'sparkle toes'.

And weirdly it was the inspiration to an Agatha Christie Miss Marple novel. She contracted it from a fan who knew they were sick with it and knew Tierney was pregnant and broke quarantine to go meet her at an event, and I’m glad to say that in the book the movie star offed her.
