Farm workers in Sunnyside WA are getting pumpkins ready for Halloween. They carry the pumpkins to the side of the field so when the tractor comes by them is easier to load it. An average pumpkin weighs 12–15 lbs, but some weigh 50lbs or more. #WeFeedYou

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

It's only socialism when you tax the wealthy & use it to fund services for the poor & middle class. Otherwise, it's just sparkling kleptocracy! Related: Family farmers have made more take-home income than non-farmers every single year since 1997. Yes, that's AFTER farm debts & expenses.

As his policies bankrupt them, Trump-supporting farmers fully embrace socialism. But only if it’s for them.

Third, automating science is not really possible in the way described. In the same way a machine cannot eat food for us because we'd starve: scientific understanding is for us to experience and share with others as a psychological state. It's a process and a cognitive state not an output.

It's not like biology has a single definition for life — nor do they need a definite meaning to start work. The whole point of science is the understandings produced by the work: that's what knowledge production is. You don't put definitions in and out comes something else. You toil to understand.

Good thread.

Gladwell's "analysis" is infuriating because it's why so many people throw up their hands in disgust with statistics & say "you can make numbers say anything." No! There's a way to do this well, and Gladwell just doesn't want to be fucked to do it.

Trump and Musk are just stringing Ukraine along and letting Russia attack it with impunity. And the American press is foolishly falling for blue smoke and mirrors, arguing whether Musk or Trump are responsible. Hint, they both are!
