Las MeniΓ±as everyone!!!

Dr. Peter Paul Rubens@peterpaulrubens.bsky.social

Pablo Picasso was constantly reenvisioning Velazquez's Las Meninas. If you must be obsessed with a painting, that's a good one! Picasso, friend of the Old Masters: his day is today.

A good reminder that when you enjoy something someone has done -- a book they wrote, a performance they gave, a speech they made, whatever -- it is incredibly powerful to just reach out and tell them directly.

randomly giving out genuine compliments is such an easy way to make the world a little nicer, i'm always surprised more people haven't figured that out and have a ton of respect for those who have

Things that people will always mention in conversation (with an important addition): - went Harvard Yale Princeton - am a doctor lawyer - "live in Berkeley" (addition)

Two octogenarian scholars at IMCLeeds overheard us talking about someone getting their DPhil at Oxford on Tolkien. Their response: - "I didn't know one could get a DPhil in Tolkien" (derogatory) - "quite"

- "when we got to Oxford, Tolkien had just left. So disappointing, because we got C.S. Lewis instead!" - "he never lectured on the topic of the course, you see." #Vindication

Scholars yn the humanityes who are at prestigious institutions and who have clout and reache sholde be usinge everye single minute of their tyme to protecte programs at less prestigious institutions. Ther sholde be a moratorium on researche until the futures of their fieldes are safe.

Two of the greatest comments from student evals over the years: 1. "fled is that music. Do I wake or sleep?" 2. "To dance beneath the diamond sky w/ one hand waving free." 3. Keep the naughty Earl (Earl of Rochester).

Just discovered an insane new form of co-intelligence where you briefly share the mind of a great thinker in history and then a portion of their mind travels in yours for the rest of your life. Calling it a "book."

There's Austen discourse and I don't need to add evidence to her greatness EXCEPT no one has observed: she offers the wittiest most biting funniest narrative voices ever to narrative voice. I mean, I am cackling!

This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong. I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.

this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here, our country moving closer to its own truth and dread, its own ways of making people disappear. -Adrienne Rich, What Kind of Times Are These #everynightapoem it's necessary to talk about trees.

Family portrait, 1678, by Emanuel de Witte. And look what they have on their wall: a painting of a church interior by Emanuel de Witte!. Lucky them! It's his day today.

So a big part of the Project 2025 goals hinges on forcing women out of the workforce. The Heritage Foundation knows that women voters hold the most power in terms of sheer numbers. If they can push you out of the workforce, they can push you out of your voting rights.
