The lessons from Brazil and Serbia?
Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right.
Don't appease.
Don't triangulate.
Don't grovel.
Don't say they have "legitimate concerns".
Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.
I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

Lining up with their petitions: the power players, the goo-goos, the optimists, the wannabes, the has-beens, never-wases, and scoundrels all taking a shot.
Billionaires and charter school lobbies have spent more than $5.2 million on the Chicago school board race, more than $2.8 million in the last two weeks alone. So we built thebillionaireboard.com to help track how much is spent and which candidates are supported by charter schools and billionaires.
We found that our fossil fuel hot water heaters had their exhaust chimney blocked, potentially leaking carbon monoxide into our home. Rather than paying to have the chimney repaired, we replaced them with heat pump water heaters which do not need to vent.
HVAC heat pumps are outselling fossil-fueled furnaces. But did you know you can also purchase a heat pump water heater? There are now 17 brands on the market! We are very happy with our HPWH. It delivers 344% efficency year round in HP only mode. 🧪💡🔌☀️💨💧🔋 cleantechnica.com/2026/10/08/1...

You're just going to have to wait to hear more about that angle but spending time with these numbers has helped me understand why we can say we are doing more democracy but feel like we have less say in how things work.
Thank you to everyone who joined the 7th Annual Bike With Rossana fundraiser! We had an amazing time touring the ward in our custom shirts, stopping by Miko’s for Italian ice, and regrouping for a backyard barbecue. Missed the event but want to donate? rossanafor33.solidarity.tech/donate-to-ro...
i really can’t bring myself to care about AI anthropomorphism debates. “is AI thinking?” i don’t know. is a calculator calculating? questions for the philosophers. what’s important is that we put sam altman in prison.

🧵The billionaire-backed Common Ground Collective was just caught electioneering at a back-to-school event for its endorsed candidates—including fundraising consultant Kyna Lenhof.
NB: 6 months ago, Lenhof had this to say about another race where CGC was spending big to spread misinformation. 🤔
Nobody is going to want to hear this, but a real risk we face, no matter who is president next, is that they will see no need to restore the rights lost or the executive power stolen in the last 10 years.
ugh, I reposted this before reading and I'm very annoyed that the headline conflates fatigue with exhaustion. The article does a good job of clarifying what the study actually is about, fatigue, which is a lot more than just feeling tired.
Here is the latest combined forecast across all 14 models, compared to past strong El Nino events. It shows just how extreme and unprecedented this event is forecast to be:

‘Supersizing before our eyes’: UN warns of record El Niño approaching
Event is likely to be largest in at least 1,000 years and will pile extra heat into a world already in a climate crisis
If you’ve been following climate long enough to watch the targets keep getting rolled back, this one is a real gut punch. At one point 1.5 was the goal we absolutely had to hit and in the span of maybe a decade it’s become completely unreachable. Just completely depressing
“This is by no means an acceptable or preferred pathway,” the U.N. said in its report Wednesday. “It is simply the best remaining option.”

I feel bad for really tall people at concerts because most of the time they're trying to be considerate, but they can't help it and there's only so much to be done
My biggest Loser opinion which I nevertheless believe to be true is that early morning wake ups are a disease which should not be encouraged by society. 8 AM should be the equivalent of the crack of dawn in the new utopia
I really wanted to address this take by @mtsw.bsky.social and they have fairly closed it off, but I am going to use a screenshot because I think this is a really good topic to discuss and as someone for whom this is my entire job and has been for over a decade now I actually agree and disagree... 🧵
Join us Saturday to collect signatures for Rossana Rodriguez and our District 17 Police District Councilors, while spreading the word for our School Board candidates!

Some hopeful words by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social I agree but everyone should be ANGRY at how fossil fuel interests have profited while doing so much damage. Numerous studies (including mine) document how effective anger can be as a mobilizer. www.theguardian.com/membership/2...
