That a metro system would be built in a northern UK city involving underground tunnels and stations is supposedly an impossible, unrealistic idea from an unserious mind. Meanwhile, Newcastle with 13km of bored tunnels and 9 underground stations built 13 years after first plans:

One of the key lessons from Dutch cycling history is cities didn't start with protected lanes. They began by making streets safer, calmer and more inviting; with lower speeds, parking restrictions, traffic filters and reduced through-traffic to create an environment in which cycling could flourish.🧵

she didn't mention what her government in the UK is doing to trans people. it never came up. i'm not sure about all this "-our- rights" stuff. why not just drop the T from your acronym and be forthright about it?

This weekend is your last chance to have your say in the North East bus franchising scheme consultation. The proposed scheme seeks to return our bus services to public control - the biggest change to bus services in our region for 40 years. Please take the time to respond this weekend! Links below.

Over to you, Newcastle.

Bravo Bristol. The ban covers advertising of petrol, diesel and hybrid-electric vehicles and SUV’s, flights, airports, cruise holidays and travel agents, firms and lobbying related to the fossil fuel industry, and marketing that encourages excessive consumption of fashion products or trends.

Compare this to the central motorway and the significant cost to keep that open and risk to workers to keep vehicles flowing. Similar to the central motorway pedestrian bridge which has been closed for weeks with inpropper signage and a long diversion. Anyone remember the hierarchy of road users?

SPACE for Heaton@spaceforheaton.com

Over 700 people cycle past this point on a weekday, and many hundreds more will walk past but don't get counted. The only alternative provided is 'walk for an extra 20 minutes'. Not good enough.

What I hate most about @kevinclimate.bsky.social is that the maths & physics in his prognosis are unfortunately very simple & that in my opinion makes it virtually certain he’s right. And that means 4° by 2100 so no, I really do not f’ing like it, not even a little!

Zack Polanski@zackpolanski.bsky.social

A climate scientist is clearly brilliant on climate science & the dangers of this moment. Even more powerful @kevinclimate.bsky.social says "As individuals we don't have much power. When we're a collective, we have so much power." It's time to take back our power. youtu.be/mBFos_T7cT0?...

Interesting when he just was quoted saying this ‘WorldPride would be an opportunity to showcase London’s values to the world’. Are those values supporting the funding of transphobic court cases and lobbying?

“The wand chooses the wizard.” 🪄 And in this case, it chose Oxford Street. Congratulations to Warner Bros on the UK’s largest Harry Potter shop. Another brilliant new destination for the West End, and proof that Oxford Street is well and truly on the up.

"They're selling snake oil again. Carbon capture is a pseudo-technology that's designed to maintain the status quo. It barely exists outside a laboratory, but whole swathes of academics still continue to work on it. Almost no one is working on radical emissions reductions for climate emergency."

Instead of saying that all these laws "prohibit trans people from using the bathroom of their choice" we should be more clear. Bathroom bans are intended to prohibit trans people from using the bathroom, or any public accomodations, at all.. Like be for real here.

Anyone thinking Burnham might be alright… he’s immediately coming after disabled people like Starmer tried and failed to do. Anyone thinking he might focus on wealth tax is deluding themselves. It’s just more of the same old austerity and let them eat cake just with a different accent.

Less than a decade ago the Conservative party in government: - Had a costed plan to fix social care, understanding it was hugely challenging - Was at the forefront of promoting trans rights - Not only believed in net zero but passed legislation to enforce it. The Tories have not aged well.

Peter Walker@peterwalker99.bsky.social

Kemi Badenoch has written to Andy Burnham to say the Tories are "happy" to work cross-party on reforming social care.... but only if he rules out the only two ways you could realistically pay for it (contributions from individuals, or higher taxes/borrowing).

A clear explanation of why some "legality" tests catch legal cycles, upon which many Disabled people rely. We're delighted to be working with forces and training providers to solve this problem while helping address the danger caused by illegal e-motorbikes shorturl.at/9roas

Repost with your most Binface policy idea Car horns must be as loud on the inside of the car as they are on the outside.

Count Binface@countbinface.bsky.social

End the madness. Vote Binface.

Making the the East Coast Main Line have 4 tracks to Morpeth or even Alnwick would be a great option instead. It would allow more local stopping services, new stations and reduce the number of cars traveling up the A1 making it safer. The mayor should lobby for this over polluting road schemes.

North East PTUG@northeastptug.bsky.social

We are concerned that many Northumberland politicians are creating the impression that dualling alone can solve safety issues on the A1 and save the Northumberland economy. Investment in speed cameras and improved public transport could achieve the same aims. northeastbylines.co.uk/news/transpo...

Don't allow people other than residents and their guests to drive to the island. All other traffic has to use a shuttle bus going from Berwick stopping at a carpark near to the causeway. Stops an expensive two way bridge having to be built and encourages public transport use.

This and they shouldn't have the 0.75m marking. There aren't any rules on how far you should ride from the side of the road. Often it's safer to take the lane, encouraging drivers to overtake fully in the other lane. This could make some sense is if they say the average span of a bike is 0.75m

Is It A Bike Lane?@isitabikelane.bsky.social

I agree with David, but also I’m in two minds about this police campaign. It’s suggesting 1.5m wheel-to-wheel. For my bike that would be around 1m wing mirror-to-handlebar. At 30mph that’s going to be scary and, I’d argue, unsafe (Alt text: pic shows car and bike on police mayo with measurements)

Solar power is generating 46.3% of the UK's electricity right now. Only 7.2% is from fossil fuels. And so many rooftops don't yet have solar panels on them - this is only going to get better. Balcony solar panels will also soon be available in the UK: no middle man between you & the sun. 🎉☀️😎

Still can't quite believe someone even considered scrapping it all. We've spent 40 million. How much more would it cost to make that worth absolutely nothing?

Queuing for a bus earlier - every time I see this, it annoys me.... we must be one of the few countries in the world, where towns have to bid to the central Gov for a bus. Must be a bid consultant's dream. The UK Gov logo is a collective sign of failure, not success.

Make anyone with the ability to control a vehicle have to have a licence from the area they are controlling the vehicle. A taxi licence would be appropriate as well.

Newcastle council are taking out some of the short stretches of protected cycle lanes we have in Gosforth in the name of decreasing bus delays. Meanwhile in London.

London Cycling Campaign@londoncycling.bsky.social

First, good news... more cycling, more cycling schemes hasn't hurt buses says TfL. Since 2019, excluding years most impacted by Covid, London's seen "43% increase in cycling journeys, achieved with minimal impact on bus journey times". Again, it isn't cycling impacting buses, but cars... 2/10
