“Colloquially and definitely in my own experience, women expressed that they avoid using voice chat in online lobbies due to toxicity concerns,” Holt said, “and this contributes to the misconception that we aren’t playing these games at all."

My fifth and final review this week (let's not do that again), Demon Tides honors Mario and Sonic by making a just as great platformer.

Reminder to other indie dev teams especially new teams. Most of us are happy to share advice and give feedback on publisher/funding/platform deals and terms. There are some shady predatory biz weasels that will take advantage of you as soon as your game starts to pop off. Please reach out.

RETURN OF THE GONG is now our most popular episode who knew gongs were so popular

Mike Rose@mikerose.bsky.social

The latest Mike & Rami episode is poppin way harder than any episode previously, and I have no idea why. Podcasts are so much harder to understand than video game sales Was it the stupid cold open I did? Was it the prop? Was it posted somewhere? I have no idea, but cool I guess? mikeandrami.com

AAA studios have historically tried to design games for the hardware that customers are going to have in the future, not the hardware they have now. If they keep trying to do that over the next... Let's say 2-to-5 years, and guess wrongly about what hardware people will have, that will be funny.

This is frickin absurd. It didn't need to be this way.

Where these guys are asking me to work as if like they’ve been really good bosses is beyond me and their claim ah we saved you from a horrible NDA that we soft locked your salaries under and living in India we had no way to fight back and we’ve been taken complete advantage of.

I’m kinda done with this bs, I’m already maxing out my credit card if they don’t send my December money over a day’s work so be it, I don’t wanna make a fool out of myself again which might lead to more emotional turmoil.

They laid me off at New Year’s Eve over an internal conflict and later told us it was our inefficiency that caused it and told we didn’t know how to make games where all along we’ve been just following their plan, with no producer or a designer we were left to figure it out ourselves

I should’ve quit the place long time ago with bad workplace practices but I was so accustomed to toxicity it felt safer to continue working there now I’m paying the price with my mental fatigue and ability to not work like I used t, it’s not burn out it’s worse, I’m rummaging resources to pay bills

GAME DESIGNERS! gimme your recommendations/thoughts: for 2026, a personal goal is playing landmark games re: game design. i did not have access to video games until my teenage years so i have no nostalgic stories about Ocarina of Time or Mega Man or [insert cult classic] so hit me with your recs.

Just came across this amazing write up and looks like an amazing game!

Roguelike deckbuilders are often variations of “number go up” but Dogpile deemphasizes that aspect in favor of “dog get big”. The result is worth your attention. Dogpile is different because it wants you to win. It manages to be easy while still being interesting. pentopixels.com/article/dogp...

My mother found this bizarre snow globe in the back of a wardrobe drawer no one had opened in years. She has no idea where it came from. Nobody else does either. If you have any leads, please get in touch. This is tearing our family apart.

Hey #GameDev, help me boost this skeet. @distraction.engineer is one of the creators of @ludumdare.com, which is arguably THE most impactful game jam in the industry. It shouldn’t be this hard for somebody of Make’s caliber to find a new role. Help me show Make the love they deserve. ❤️

Mike Sux 🍁@distraction.engineer

So uh, is anyone looking to hire a developer with an uncomfortable amount of knowledge about #atproto and #activitypub, experience building from scratch and running a social network (@ludumdare.com), hacking on GPU drivers/network protocols/the Linux kernel, plus a couple decades as a pro gamedev? 🤷

The industry loves nothing, devours everything, and will never care for anything but its own growth. If we want a better games industry, it has to be about people. It has to be caring for people, building up people, supporting people, protecting people, empowering people, connecting people.

Chris DeRose@scratchyderose.bsky.social

The cruelest and harshest lesson I’ve learned in life, and repetitively reminded of over and over and OVER again, is that while you can love and have a deep passion for the industry…at the end of the day, and most chances are, the industry won’t love you back…🙃
