12 years later, despite the rise of right wing anti-foreigner wackos, this is still the worst I've personally had happen to me in Japan.

It’s just so appalling and enraging how casual and commonplace this has become. I’m out of words.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

I met him at two Cons. The first one, in Pasadena, I asked him to sign my copy of the VHS "Moon Trap". He looked at it, then me and said, "You LIKED this shit?" Years later I saw him at another and to my surprise he saw me and said, "Well if It's not my only Moon Trap fan, back again."

Oh, dear. I had the good fortune to meet him a few times at conventions and had lunch with him once in Australia. Such a lovely fellow and of course an iconic figure in science fiction. RIP.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

And now I'm halfway through Star Trek Season 2! I note that in the last two episodes ("The Deadly Years" and "Obsession"), Kirk has shown a dangerous irrationality and hubris.

Finished the Jack the Ripper Star Trek episode and I notice that every Robert Bloch episode a) leans into horror, and b) has an H.P. Lovecraft reference in it (he and Lovecraft were friends).

("What Little Girls are Made of" and "Catspaw" both refer to "the Old Ones" (Lovecraft's creatures), and "Wolf in the Fold" paraphrases the famous opening line of Lovecraft's essay, "Supernatural Horror in Literature": "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear...")

Every year I'm reminded of the askew Orguss and every year I smile at it. I actually got Run Sasaki to sign this DVD set lol

It’s a lot easier to watch retro anime nowadays than it was when these shows were airing because of @discotekmedia.bsky.social and @animeigo.com putting out so many easily accessible and affordable BD sets of classics.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen stay exactly the same in your lifetime? I say rubber bands. They were fine back then and they’re fine now.

We are sad to learn that Japanese writer Ryū Murakami has passed away at 74 years old. Murakami wrote the 1997 novel AUDITION which was adapted into Takashi Miike's horror masterpiece. He also wrote the novels Almost Transparent Blue and Coin Locker Babies. Rest in Peace.

As far as I can recall, it was Journey Back to Oz, an unofficial cartoon sequel to the 1939 film, starring Liza Minnelli as Dorothy. Wikipedia gives its release date as 1972, which would have been too early for me. But Cartoon Brew says it played in '74-'75, which would've been when I saw it.

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

OK, I just watched the Star Trek episode "Metamorphosis," and I see that, along with the Nomad episode, is the template for TMP, but WHAT THE FUCK. Hedford just ceases to exist, and NO ONE CARES.

I have just found out that Akira Senju, the composer for Mobile Suit Victory Gundam has an album where the cover art is himself doing the Giorno Giovanna pose and it's drawn by Hirohiko Araki

Watching Star Trek ("I, Mudd") this evening was interesting... I don't think I've seen it before, but I vividly remember an elementary school friend narrating the story to me, down to Spock saying he loves one android and hates another identical one...

...Spock's "Logic is a wreath of pretty flowers which smell BAD" speech, and the ending with Mudd's wife. As soon as we saw her, I knew what was going to happen.

Took these yesterday, was saving her for a time where I was really sad, and instead I was feeling good after feeling sad, and felt like this would be a nice boost, and it was! Sadly then I had an emotional nuke dropped on me, but I am working through the fallout and thought sharing Sayla might help💕

"anyway so there's this show in the 80s that was basically Japanese Thunderbirds but they had a giant robot and it was dubbed into English in the UK and Brian May from Queen and Eddie Van Halen thought it was cool so they recorded an album of songs based on it." "Sophie what are you talking about"

I'd like to remind Trump administration that after Iran war started, Ukraine deployed experts and technology to the Middle East to help Gulf states defend themselves against Iranian drones and protect US bases in the region, while Russia provided targeting information to Iran.

BREAKING: Trump's head of FEMA just told states to prepare to handle disasters on their own. The Trump admin's disaster chief told state officials they must increase their financial reserves and emergency capabilities to handle most disasters on their own — without federal help.
