In his talk at Princeton, @marcelias.bsky.social noted that the election suppression he worried about was less ICE at the polls and more ICE putting up traffic checkpoints and other things that made access to the polls much harder. And it looks like we’re seeing a version of that in Brazil.

here, write it down so it’s easy to repeat: an illegitimate supreme court allowed an insurrectionist barred by the 14th amendment to take office and his pardons aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on

The first subpoena from the new Democratic Congress should be to Mark Zuckerberg, for taking down the No Kings Instagram account in the middle of one of the largest days of civic activism in American history. No Kings. No Courtiers.

There will be children growing up whose parents, fans whether present or erstwhile, named them “Elon”. They should perhaps be provided bodyguards from among the upperclassmen when they go into the playground or dodgeball arena.

The owner of X is almost single-handedly funding the Republican midterm election campaigns. Here’s why Bluesky has an intellectual diversity problem.

One of the things I enjoy about ageing is the sense that I understand the concept of wisdom in a way I was not capable of when young, as an accumulation of perspectives that informs, enriches, and also complicates every judgement and cogitation. Reading probably helps.

Sometimes I have to stop myself (or worse, fail to) from making mean-spirited jokes. Not because I'm expressing hateful views, but because I spot the *structural* opportunity for a good joke, automatically fill it in, and sometimes open my mouth before thinking about content and implications.

(Ditto puns. I see the double meaning, I come up with a quip quickly because my style of humour is conversational wit not memorised jokes or bits, and...well, every statement carries some association or other, including whatever I'm hearing myself say. I do it in text too, but it's easier to catch.)

Today Russia celebrated the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia. At least 15 people are killed, among them 3 children. The number may rise as rescuers check the rubble‼️

Wow — listen to these new comments from Trump. Thanking Putin, trashing Zelenskyy, characterizing Russia as eager for peace and Ukraine as intransigent. The mask is totally off.

The same people who lambasted other nations as "shithole countries" seem to have made diarrhœa the central pillar of their health platform. Make America Gush Anally, I guess.

It occurs to me that Mar-a-Lago face (and the male equivalent) is kind of like a facial gang tattoo. It's not natural appearance or personal taste so much as a mark of fealty, only inscribed with a scalpel instead of an improvised prison needle.

hollywood releasing a bunch of movies about how an insane, radicalized cabal of billionaires are trying to gobble up the world economy approximately 3 weeks after said insane cabal gobbles up the entertainment industry is what historians call a "whoopsy doodle" moment

I've never been comfortable with the Death of the Author idea. Not fully. I think there's a good deal to it, but as one lens alongside another that keeps the author in view. If I did buy it completely, I'm not sure how I'd justify privileging human writers over AI slop.

It's good to point out these sorts of lame intimidation efforts. But it's also important to put the ineffectiveness in context. If the goal is to promote voting, flagging the structural limitations of federal threats should be part of that process.

I'm not sure what the point of including cucumber in food is supposed to be when it isn’t serving as a vehicle for flavourful vinegar or brine solution. It’s a bite of soggy nothing with a nasty rind.

These OpenAI hacks remind me that 'people must still be held responsible for autonomous agents that are not *moral* agents' is not a new idea. See: the fucking *Bible*, Ex 21:28–29…and I’m pretty sure they borrowed it from or based it on other ANE law codes.

In other words, we’ve known for at least nearly four thousand years that “it’s got a mind of its own” is not a meaningful excuse for being held morally and legally liable.

These OpenAI hacks remind me that 'people must still be held responsible for autonomous agents that are not *moral* agents' is not a new idea. See: the fucking *Bible*, Ex 21:28–29…and I’m pretty sure they borrowed it from or based it on other ANE law codes.

Ex 21:28–29: “When an ox gores a man or a woman to death, the ox must be stoned, and its meat may not be eaten, but the ox’s owner is innocent. However, if the ox was in the habit of goring, and its owner has been warned yet does not restrain it […] its owner must also be put to death.”

Ah, here’s the Hammurabic Code, a bit more lenient, 251(?): “If the ox is a habitual gorer and its owner has been warned, but he does not protect his ox, and it gores a man and causes his death, the owner shall pay half a mina of silver.”

Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is one of my favourite minor LotR characters. From Wodehousian auntagonist to redemption with her testamentary charity, she's a surprisingly rich portrait in such few words and a female LotR character with some depth.

I could actually feel a little bad for Ed Sheeran in the first few moments. I could understand wanting to stay publically…not neutral, but silent. I *enjoy* the luxury of not having my opinions scrutinised by the world and risk massive backlash and even serious threats. Insignificance has upsides.

But while I could sympathise with him wishing Macklemore hadn't put him in this position, that's where he found himself and, fair or not, he had to decide how to deal with it. And he certainly made a Choice. And that choice rather overshadows the initial discomfort.

I guess if you want to make sure this can't happen to you on an uncomfortable hot-button issue, you may have to choose not to be a massively famous and public celebrity.

I think I’m the only person I’m aware of who regularly footnotes¹ their messages in Slack and on social media. ¹ Thus.² ² Obviously, setting up a Compose Key to easily type ¹, ², ³, &c.—or for that matter ₄, ₅, ₆, or ⅓—makes it easier.

Once told this joke to some coworkers as we were heading back from lunch, though I may not have mentioned Discworld, just the joke itself. When I finished the bit about carefully torturing small kings, one of them asked me if it was true. Only time I can recall *actually* doubling up laughing.

It would be very funny if the toxic tech bro problem were solved by 2,400-year-old means from the classics/humanities: Lysistrata-method Palantir’s workforce out of existence. I’m not saying that’s a realistic hope, but it’s at least entertaining to imagine Aristophanes vs. Alex Karp.

wired.comWhy No One Wants to Date Tech BrosOnce seen as nerdy but harmless innovators, men in tech are now widely regarded as red pilled Elon Musk wannabes. It’s made getting laid a whole lot harder.
