After driving from home 2 days to attend @allthingsopen.bsky.social, I have come to the conclusion that working from home is the correct decision for me. 22 miles in 35 minutes, 18 of it all highway/interstate. In office/hybrid, not gonna happen.

My wife had me go see this show last night. She said it was called Maybe Happy Ending, and that Asians were the main characters. It was weird, about robots and finding love. Not a single scene in a massage parlor. Not sure where the Happy Ending came into the title.

I sent a screenshot of this to my sister and Apple marks it as possible self harm.

I tried out for this and damn if it isn’t hard. Multiple multiple questions on sports most won’t know a lot about. 50 questions, 10 seconds each. A lot harder to think and type it out, rather than think and say it. Different parts of your brain.

I hear ya But it also allows for pet projects/large PoCs to be worked.

At the point in my career where I'm mostly doing devops and project/consult work outside of high severity issues. That also means when nothing is on fire and projects aren't touching my scope (or we're in EOFY change freeze), I am so bored. A scripting monkey with no bananas if you will.

Yeah, most K8S “solutions” are RDD, Resume Driven Developement.

Quiet Contrarian@thisisvj23.bsky.social

The most "scalable" architectures are usually just monuments to an engineer's desire to put Kubernetes on their resume while the actual product is a single CRUD app that could run on a toaster.

And that’s why I’m not convinced AI is going to make it long term. It’s now, but for how long. When will actual software engineers need to pick up the pieces of all the slop that was written and figure out what the code is actually doing.

Yep, not everything has to be AI. I use it mostly for troubleshooting failed GHA runs and writing scripts for cost analysis AWS.

And don’t forget all the random medications for moderate to severe X condition. Don’t take if allergic. Side effects consist of rash between anus and genitals, explosive diarrhea, and all sorts of other things that you’d rather just suffer through instead of that mess.

I saw a post on LinkedIn about AWS and avoiding the “a” AZ in a region because it’s “overcrowded” Clearly, they don’t realize that AWS has it where the a, b, c, etc are actually mapped to different DC locations so that it really doesn’t matter which AZs you choose.

A stunner from @dvnjr.bsky.social and me: Bill Belichick is not a first ballot Hall of Famer. He didn't get elected this year. The 8-time champion failed to 40 out of the 50 votes required for induction. www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/...

This guy needs to put the airline. Let the public know who do this so the public can make them pay for that act.

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second. We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

I keep telling people this all the time. It’s called “tech debt” for a reason. At some point, you have to pay that price.

Chris Martin@chris--martin.functional.cafe.ap.brid.gy

It's sort of a flex to ignore your ops budget because your product and your engineers' time is worth more than the AWS bill, but my view is that you should stay mindful of costs even when you don't need to, because spending your way out of bad architecture choices only kicks the can down the […]

We’re in a really bad place and it’s only going to get worse before it gets better… if it gets better at all

A common social media interaction I will never understand: Person A: makes easily disproved false claim Person B: “that’s wrong, here is the correct fact+source.” Person A: “OK, but my point stands.” wtf no it doesn’t

Annual reminder that titles are wildly inconsistent across the industry. I’m currently a Senior software engineer. 4 years before this role I was a Staff software engineer. Last year I was offered a Senior Principal role at a different company. The rules are made up and the points don’t matter.

Yeah… Had a 4 hour delay leaving destination. All while sitting in the plane on the runway. Then missed connecting flight. Now have to wait 6 hours for the next one. Did I mention I hate traveling?

T.J. Hawkins@hawktail.io

I love to travel, but hate traveling. I’m trying to get something to eat before my flight. Sitting in a restaurant and the guy being me is doing a FaceTime call with the speaker on full blast. What the hell is wrong with people.

Agreed AI is shit and I rarely use it because it can’t give me what I’m looking for. And yes, my queries are specific and written well. They normally give wrong answers, I tell it it gave a wrong answer and tries to correct and it’s still wrong.

Shout out to H‑E‑B for stepping up once again to help Texas in a time of need. From delivering food and water to deploying mobile kitchens. Some in our coalition have signed up to volunteer on the ground, while others are donating to support the recovery from afar.

I love everything about this article. Serves him right that this thing is a flop.

CNN@cnn.com

Despite Elon Musk's bold predictions, the Cybertruck is, officially, a flop. Tesla is deliberately opaque about its sales numbers on specific models, so you have to squint to get a sense of just how badly the company's unique pickup truck is performing in the real world. | Analysis cnn.it/4nyCKrO

I aspire to do the final job, not the others, the coding job I have is just fine.

Dmitriy Ryaboy@squarecog.bsky.social

Still thinking about it. Serious "retired samurai" energy. Man's just standing there, pouring beers, drying glasses, listening to young coders in this city of startups go through their ups and downs. Dispensing wisdom about code and life.

I’ve been saying this for years. Why should a handful of states dictate to the rest who should be the candidate? Let us all choose at the same time like we do on Election Day in November. And don’t release results until Alaska/Hawaii are completed.

Matthew Yglesias @mattyglesias.bsky.social

The correct primary sequence is for all the states to vote on the same day, meaning that in a broad field nobody gets a majority of the delegates and then the candidates & their delegates bargain to select a good ticket.
