The video here may seem shocking, but the polling -- from three diffrent group, including the first from the aChord Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem -- shows it's not a fringe view in Israel:

Owen Jones@owenjones.bsky.social

Just listen to this. Then consider these polls: 76% of Jewish Israelis think there are no innocents in Gaza (Aug 2025) 82% support expelling Palestinians from Gaza (May 2025) 47% support killing all inhabitants of conquered enemy cities (May 2025)

I am a bit perturbed by the mention of gloves! Why gloves? unless there were arsenic-green bindings involved, were these at all necessary? Hope they were not the white cotton items beloved of the media Clean hands are usually best practice, nitrile gloves if absolutely necessary.

Massive thanks to Dr Susana Sanchez-Gonzalez and all @porticolibrary.bsky.social for introducing our MA English students to their wonderful 19C collections last week! Our students were fascinated by Susana's talk and delighted to get their (gloved) hands on this exciting material!

Nineteenth century background also gets you to why Tolkien has an "oh shit, I need to crowbar in the marriageable woman for Aragorn" moment, and Maas has an "oh shit, I need to explain why there are slums in the perfect fairy city because someone needs a grotty flat to reflect their emotions" moment

You'd think Maasian Romantasy returns to medieval romance, but really it changed *nineteenth-century* genre emphasis, refocusing on "marriage plot" over "condition of England". Gothic novel redux (so vestigial romance) but medieval chronicle characteristics (vestigial Tolkien). In this essay...

First medieval parent genre of fantasy is romance (Ossian, Gothic romance, MacDonald, Dunsany). Tolkien changed the model by making it (weirdly) medieval chronicle + nineteenth century social realist novel

The real unfair competition women are being forced into with men is having women's sports constantly separated off as a distinct event which is made to compete commercially with much better funded and socially and institutionally enfranchised men's sporting events & found inadequate by that standard

Yet another "expert" review that fails to recognise that research infrastructure exists outside STEM and Medicine. Yet no rocket science is required to find studies of the infrastructure that powers SHAPE research: www.sas.ac.uk/national-rol...

This removes from view the subjects most UK undergraduates and taught postgraduates study, subjects that by the government's own data outperform STEM subjects internationally (www.gov.uk/government/p... ) and that top many QS rankings. Our infrastructure is under attack, if only we could see it.

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

Mega-bestsellers are books that appeal to people who read very few books as well as to (or instead of) habitual readers. I suspect that has some effect on the channels where discussion happens.

Rhys Kaminski-Jones@rhyskamjones.bsky.social

Surprisingly little "New ACOTAR book" posts on here. Clearly my Bluesky feed has the perfect storm of people who would never read Romantasy, Romantasy readers who would never read Maas, and people who won't admit it in public

(I would also be interested to see sustained critical engagement with the ACOTAR phenomenon, even though, having read some earlier Maas, my interest in reading the books themselves even for criticism is, hypocritically, nil.)

Ireland has some responsibility on this. One of the greatest contributions we could be making to collective EU & global democracy & security (far more useful then disastrous attempts to remove the triple lock) would be having the courage to step up to our role as digital regulator in a serious way.

Adam Schwarz@adamjschwarz.bsky.social

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

Though I confess, even though I'm following a lot of SFF publishing folks, book talk gets drowned out by US politics at the best of times. This is not the best of times.

Look, I know all the reasons we got here, but we really need to start seriously thinking about what we do in a world where The Markets punish whole countries for voting for decency, compassion, and fairness. We must stop pretending the capitalist machine is an objective, value neutral force.

It's very, very telling, I think, that the markets are so concerned about the pro-democracy incumbent winning

This report is genuinely overwhelming, in terms of the evidence both against Trump and of a ham-fisted cover-up. Including one instance in which Ghislaine Maxwell was actually about to mention one of Trump's young accusers and Todd Blanche told her to stop talking. The media response is "yawn."

Field day for #Skystorians teaching the industrial revolution this week. Have a read of the Tony Blair Institute's potted IR history, cited in its September 2026 'Hard Tech, Hard Power' paper. 'Modernity, as we currently understand it, was conceived in England in the mid-eighteenth century.'

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.
