i'm wearing earplugs everywhere these days. i wonder if there is some kind of aging thing where everything all of a sudden seems super loud?

my earplugs are just standard 26 dB, but i kinda wanna go crazy and get the highest i can afford that are still in ear

THE NEXT AFFORDABILITY CLIFF IS CARS

Frank Luntz@frankluntz.bsky.social

Americans now owe $1.68 trillion on car loans — more than credit card debt and nearly equal to all federal student loans combined. The average monthly payment on auto loans for new cars has risen to $680, which is 40% higher than in 2018.

Your spooky season reminder that there is a ~40% jump in pedestrian fatalities on Halloween compared to control days (and a 10x increase in risk for little kids). Closing streets is a great idea. It’s also an excellent night to avoid driving if you can. Source: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Halloween is coming. You don’t have to go to a “trunk-or-treat” event in Seattle! You can close your neighborhood street to through-traffic – for free! Trick-or-Streets permits are free and easy to get. Join here: seattle.gov/transportation/trick-or-streets

Anyone can become disabled at any time. It’s not a moral failing. It’s not laziness or a lack of effort. It’s a part of the human condition. People get sick. Bodies break down. It’s a minority group you can join any time.

in the year 2001, over 40,000 people in the USA officially died in motor vehicle crashes. this is likely an undercount. there are little crosses and memorials on every road, bridge, underpass, highway, freeway, on buildings now pre-reinforced with steel bollards.

Blackford Safe Routes@blackfordsaferoutes.co.uk

Remember that more people died on US roads after 9/11, than during the tragedy itself, because they decided to drive instead of fly Because aviation has been made systemically safe 25 years later, little progress has been made making our streets safe, and US road deaths are at an all-time high

despite various terrorist incidents involving high speed ford f150s, nothing substantial has been done. in the usa, guns and cars do for kids what terrorists and gangs and even our cops have never ever dreamed of doing.

For many years, ICE didn't have its own medical claims processing for detainees, running 3rd party medical bills through the VA's system. Last year, right-wing influencers convinced the Trump admin to abruptly cancel this contract. With no replacement, ICE specialized medical care has gone unpaid.

ICE hasn’t paid for detainee medical care since October. Advocates call it the ‘death policy’ — my latest, w/ @kolyncheang.bsky.social. Spend some time with it www.sfchronicle.com/politics/art...

yes, lake ontario should be renamed to ontario. ontario makes more sense. lake ontario is like atm machine. it already means lake or water. JUST ONTARIO.

On today’s grim one-year anniversary of the Trump administration’s boat strikes campaign — which has snuffed out at least 227 lives — it’s more important than ever to insist that the strikes are not simply inhumane and ineffective, but illegal. My reflections in @thehill.com :

How can we think is OK? Surely this must demand some pretty fundamental questions about the society we've built. As IPPR says, we can not blame young people, and must look to structural and social issues shaping childhood and youth, and, importantly, must respond with more than "youth policy".

Nearly half of young women aged 16–24 now meet the threshold for psychological distress. For young men, it’s more than a third. Read more here: www.ippr.org/articles/the...

A tetanus-diphtheria vaccine that doesn’t need a fridge has passed its first human trial. UK scientists reformulated a licensed shot using trehalose, the sugar that lets desert plants survive without water, keeping it stable for up to two years at 30°C. Gavi buff.ly/1kNIUHB #ShareGoodNewsToo

what i tell people in boston, new york or california is that our cities used to be expensive, but now they are cheaper and easier to live in because of lowered competition in rural areas.

Trump: "At one year, you should have 5 separate visits for vaccines rather than getting them all in the same day. I've seen proof of where they have a vaccination thing that looks like the size of a bottle of soda and pour it into a little child's body."

NEW: This week we broke down five ways Trump could rig the midterms. Meanwhile, his DOJ is now 0-21 in its crusade for state voter rolls--0-22 if you count an appeals court loss. Also, we're officially in the "quiet period" when states are barred from systemically removing people from those rolls.

I understand that funding bodies want to go all in on AI as the shiny new innovation thing. But if all the grants start going to AI at the expense of everything else then the research sector is going to end up looking like a farm with dozens of threshers hacking away in a field with no wheat.
