I have thoughts about the election of the AfD in Sachsen-Anhalt and how an election steeped in symbolism of the GDR is not actually a problem of re-litigating German reunification.

For the first time since the Second World War, the far right will form a government in Germany. But the rot in Saxony-Anhalt stems from decades of neglect. dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...

Was muss die Linke nun tun?
Linus Westheuser@lwestheuser.bsky.social

Amazingly, the entire trackage of the old Prussian-Eastern Railway (the Ostbahn) is still active and maintained, technically all the way to Kaliningrad/Königsberg (but of course the sanctions mean trains don't go there). One hardy traveler has actually done it. trainstobeyond.com/2022/09/20/2...

This is not meant to dunk on the poster, but a genuine question about public perception. Is it a widely held notion that Nixon’s War on Drugs was the beginning of narcotics prohibition in the United States? I’ve seen this a few times recently and can’t tell if it’s an outlier.

Also a good opportunity to segue into a plug for Emily Dufton’s great new book on how the opening of Nixon’s war on drugs war primarily focused on a national network of methadone clinics rather than more heavy handed policing press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...

There has been a constant campaign against aid to Ukraine, but I see this as another victim of austerity politics. You can’t keep saying the country is broke and cut things close to home and not expect some people to turn on foreign aid.

Yes, the phrase the "Jewish question" is Nazi vocabulary, but in this case it is not being employed as such, but as an attack on the incoming Left-SPD-Green govt in Berlin as an implication that they are antisemitic.

The language is tasteless, but the larger issue is the radicalization that leads a party to using AI slop to attack democratic opponents as Nazi-Islamo-Communists, which also includes the inappropriate use of Nazi rhetoric.

In this case, a CDU group in Potsdam posted this image with the text "The Jewish question has been settled; now expropriation will begin. The "fire wall" has fallen" with an image of Berlin's city hall adorned with minarets and the hammer and sickel. Also the national colours of Bulgaria?

Far right Verfassungspatriotismus is a strange thing to behold. But it does line up with the American far right where the constitution is less a text and a body of law than a free floating signifier about who has the right to rule.

Some this AfD email stuff is juicy, scary and oh so familiar A 2023 letter to the AfD's NRW office proposed armed soldiers and police occupy the Reichstag and take power temporarily. "Politicians who exercise state authority in violation of the Basic Law can only be opposed by force," it says.

A 56-year-old Mexican man held at a federal immigration facility in Laredo was found dead in his cell Saturday morning. His family says the center would not give him medicine for diabetes, high blood pressure and a heart condition. He is the 7th person to die in ICE custody in Texas this year.

It is a telling contrast that the first big joint initiative of the AfD-BSW in Sachsen-Anhalt is a demand to cut off all aid to Ukraine, while the new Linke-Green-SPD coalition in Berlin is highlighting its plans to bring back free Sunday admission to museums.

Also a reminder that the state election results that were so catastrophic in 2018 that Merkel was compelled to step down as CDU party chair was a 27% showing in Hessen. Compare this to recent results for the CDU under Merz in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern where the party was eliminated entirely.
