I've never thought of it like that, but it makes a lot of sense, and it fits with the way a lot of the people who insist we think of the brain as a machine seem to hold teleological views cloaked in scientism

Romain Brette@romainbrette.bsky.social

Something odd happens if you argue that the concept of machine is not well fit to describe living systems. Often, the response is not just that it's wrong: it's heretic (vitalism!). What this says is that the machine view of life is more a modern crypto-Christian belief than a scientific theory.

My most controversial Rat take is that being into Analytic-Philosophy > Continental is a "Wordcel" tendency, not a "Shape-Rotator" tendency. Everyone I know with a background in Physics/Engineering, and also an interest in philosophy, is into like Deleuze, Lacan, Guattari and so on and so forth

As a former pretentious little shit who grew out of it, rationalists (et al) annoy the piss out of me because they are adults with the mentality of tweens - they are somehow still convinced they are the greatest geniuses who have ever walked the earth. It is the worldview of an arrogant baby.

I'm so tired of interacting with those who think that parasitic industries aren't vile: ones that depend on services we all own collectively to fail, e.g. so-called AI for supposedly helping the underserved educationally. I hate companies who steal labour for profit too. Or damage the environment.

Hey @ericlipton.nytimes.com 👋 AI is not “evolving” on its own. *People* are choosing how to build it. *People* are choosing how to train it. *People* are choosing how to run it. Maybe the problem is that they are the *wrong people* to make these choices.

OpenAI’s top scientist, in a blog post on Sunday, warns that artificial intelligence is evolving so rapidly that it is becoming increasingly difficult for humans to understand and control it. Here is the post: openai.com/index/an-ali... And a couple of small excerpts--clear warnings.

Seems like a good time to post quote from Stewart & Norvig (3rd edition) of events in 1997. "Kasparov said that he felt a “new kind of intelligence” across the board from him. Newsweek magazine described the match as “The brain’s last stand.” The value of IBM’s stock increased by $18 billion."

In a "collaboration" (which we left), someone used an LLM to make a "summary" on topics for the project (without our consent) in which published research ideas from @olivia.science & me understandably popped up, but were credited to men, while our names showed up nowhere in the "summary". 🧵

HEXED looks…fine. But WILDWOOD and FORGOTTEN ISLAND? I will RUN to theaters to see those, day one. Because just from the trailers, I can see the love the artists put in & both look like a blast to have worked on HEXED looks like an exec said “magic & witches are popular rn so this’ll make money”

There is one really bad AGI-doubter/X-risk-doubter argument that really grinds my gears. The argument basically, is that perfectly *simulating/emulating* human cognition would be computationally intractable. And like... ok maybe. But that's completely beside the point.

Ok, Will. I can explain 🧵 1. Platner did not just suddenly wake up saying the right words. We know this because of the leaked content from his reddit account "P-Hustle". The leak contained posts/replies going back even to 2018 in some cases. (...)

Here’s the thing with Platner: what is his actual deal? We have a lot of information about this guy. He hasn’t been a longtime fighter for his community or progressivism or populist causes. He just woke up one day and decided to start saying the right words. Well, okay, a lot of people can do that.

Bernie was that guy for us, but he's too old now. You could argue Warren was on our side too, but she's aging out as well. AOC is the next big star of the far-left, but we still worry about her. We worry that she's still too young. That America isn't ready for a woman president. (...)

So when it's 2025 and everyone in the center-left is rallying around Gavin Newsom as this psychopathic tough guy who's gonna Mog the fuck outta Trump for us. The left-flank also wants our own Gavin!! But we got none. But then Platner appears.

For optics-obsessed leftists like myself, the dream is to be able to have candidates whose aesthetic branding appeals to a wider swath of America, while still maintaining the core left-populist substance that we really care about. (...)

Lastly, Platner is such a big deal for the left-flank of the democratic party because we are in a bit of a crisis. We are coming up on our biggest opportunity to change US politics in almost a century, and we do it without a clear leader. (...)

I won't lie and pretend his Aesthetic has nothing to do with his success. Modern politics is about Marketing and Branding. But I don't think you're reading it right. He doesn't make dweebs on the left feel tough. But he's what we think will appeal to blue collar people (...)

You talk about "vaguely populist bro politics" and I just think you are fundamentally mistaken. Maybe I would be more worried if he only showed evidence of being vaguely populist, but as his reddit comments show, he identified as "socialist" and "communist" (...)

These aren't vaguely populist. These are squarely far-left ideologies. And we have socialists in the democratic party!! AOC is a socialist. Bernie Sanders is a Socialist. Zohran Mamdani is a Socialist. Given they are all quite popular, I'm not sure what the confusion is. (...)

In some of these posts Platner says ordinary left-wing stuff. In other's he openly identifies as "Socialist" or even "Communist" At a minimum we can be certain the Platner has been *very* left wing for like 5 years. Likely much longer. (...)
