here we find Eliezer Yudkowsky engaging in the classic 90s and 2000s genre of “insecure straight guy getting really defensive about liking Buffy the Vampire Slayer”

“Yes, I like Buffy, but not for the stupid reasons you plebeian ignoramuses do,” he says, while wearing a fedora and khaki cargo shorts (did Yud ever go through a Hawaiian shirt phase?)

While I am no psychologist or psychiatrist, Eliezer Yudkowsky’s account of his own life does read exactly like the writing of every other reasonably articulate person with a severe personality disorder:

Here is Eliezer Yudkowsky explaining (like a very normal person who absolutely does not have some kind of acute personality disorder) why, on the basis of his childhood test scores, he is a special genius uniquely qualified to change the world: web.archive.org/web/20010309...

like I suspect many of you on This Website, I think a core reason why I find Eliezer Yudkowsky and his rationalist and effective altruist satellites so intensely annoying is because I had a VERY similar “being a super weird, pretentious, hyper-literate kid” experience - I just, you know, grew up.

As a former pretentious little shit who grew out of it, rationalists (et al) annoy the piss out of me because they are adults with the mentality of tweens - they are somehow still convinced they are the greatest geniuses who have ever walked the earth. It is the worldview of an arrogant baby.

I can’t help but think that going to college would have helped *some* of these people with humility. I was all kinds of smart kid hot shit (with a sweet mental condition to spice things up) but holy fucking shit professors of philosophy and psychology at Duke were “super smart kids who spent 30-50

years reading and writing and researching extremely carefully” and holy shit do you realize what true erudition and deep knowledge and often wisdom looks like (more often the former two, interestingly enough, even among philosophers). And they tended to be quite humble despite their “yeah then I

had to learn Japanese because there was a 3 Tesla fmri machine at a university there that wanted to do my research” and their “the dalai llama told me privately that belief in reincarnation is a comforting falsehood” kind of insane stories. And then you realize what you are *not* (certainly at that

point in your life). (Btw chatting to you about ADHD elsewhere reminded me that I had meant to reply to this.) Clearly there are tons of Yud-likes who *did* graduate college so this is not a panacea against insufferably precious thinkers but hey, it helped me avoid becoming one!

Sometimes there is someone who clearly is a genius at a young age (e.g. Richard Feynman who had theorems named after him while still a teenager). But the other part of genius is knowing it's boundaries and that being a genius at physics or music doesn't make you a genius at everything else.

Right. There's little* shame in having a sophomoric fascination with rat-ism/AanRynd/FHerbert/... pretentious whatever as a sophomore, provided one grows out of it. *yes, a little, it's good for humility to remember being THAT wrong, and remembering that growth is possible. (Even in others.)

(Our Honors Physics TA was a perpetual grad student and editor of the local rat-ist birdcage liner. He was strategically positioned, intentionally or not, to recruit the most arrogant frosh to the movement. But he personally was hardly an aspirational role model.)

We think one of the main values of going to an elite school as a pretentious little shit is meeting people who are: 1. Smarter than you, and/or 2. So pretentious as to be unbearable. It really can provide perspective.

It is no coincidence that rationalists and EAs tend to be straight white guys from well-off families, because for everybody else, the world usually conspires to knock some sense into you about your inherent god-emperor genius by the time you’re old enough to drink.

A lot of these guys also leave formal education pretty early, which is too bad because there is nothing like getting an advanced degree (in my experience) to teach you that you are not smart and your brain is not special.

Faine, Yudkowksy is literally the first person to point out that it would be a bad thing for society to be run by evil artificial intelligence, breaking with decades of scientific consensus.

What I find annoying is that the rest of us (I mean mostly those of us assigned prey at birth), upon learning we were creepy and off-putting and getting past our Wednesday Addams leaning into it phase, asked a very different question than "how do I mask that to get laid"

I remember spending my early 20s reading blogs (once again, by autistic women and AFAB enbies) about the hidden curriculum and social expectations and how not to make a terrible social faux pas. Not pickup techniques. Why are autistic cis men so... *Waves hands* awful?

Tbf, I can see how in the slide from 'how not to make social faux pas' to 'how not to creep out women you are sincerely interested in' to 'how to pick up women you find attractive' to 'how to get laid' it could be hard to find when you've crossed a line. I think there are real challenges for men >

I know for sure it's not just a having-a-masculine-body and people-assuming-a-threat thing because as a trans man I pass well, and I'm the guy the new AuDHD ladies will come and sit next to out of choice because I apparently give off "safe weirdo vibes"

The older I get, the more at peace with my bipolarness I am cuz the version of me that DIDN'T have the universe directly saying "bruh you are not the 'smarter than EVERYONE cuz you do good on standardized tests' genius you thought you were" would be just....unbearable.

if Eliezer Yudkowsky was born into a somewhat poorer family and missed a couple lucky breaks, he’d have ended up as an archetypal specimen of your friend’s older cousin who keeps boa constrictors and makes you listen to him talk about quantum physics in his parent’s basement in exchange for weed

His writing reminds me of interviews w/Ted Bundy, Charles Manson & a few other serial killers: In love with their own voices and minds, certain every word is gold to the listener yet w/zero sense of obligation to make the rantings logically cohesive to listener. Blah, blah, blah.

I can almost guarantee that my IQ score is higher than his (as measured at age 9), but I don’t think of myself as a genius or that it had any impact on my life other than qualifying for a cool middle school program. And I certainly don’t think it makes me qualified to save the world.

Have the same shock whenever I read things about Elon Musk being a singular IQ off the charts genius, and the evidence cited is like… basic test scores that are lower than mine. Higher education processes hundreds of thousands of such students, most of them without Fourth Reich fantasies

Also: Instead of growing the fuck up they are spending considerable mental bandwith on creating systems that make sure they don't have to

What's your thoughts on all this? Yudkowskyi seems like an odious individual but I'm v unconvinced by the 'demonise Yud, who wants AI progress stopped & tarnish AI safety researchers by association more than AI leaders steaming ahead' & 'police anthropomorphic language' as ways to build a coalition.

I’ve had similar thoughts about Trump. bsky.app/profile/mega...

He’s been a 3rd rate hustler his whole life. If not for his father’s fortune, he would have been selling used cars on Cross Bay Blvd and had his knees broken by the Gambinos for not paying back a loan. It’s what he knows.

I have to say reading Duncan's piece I recognized a lot of myself in these people. But as you say, some of us grew up. I am not always entirely sure why I grew up when I did, but I think engaging with people who were anti-racist helped, along with my father's committed Marxism.

As well, I grew up in radical circles, and in a working class environment during my formative years. Maybe transitioning from that to a wealthier neighborhood did it; a lot of absurdity was revealed that way. But the fundamental fact is yes, the Rationalist™️ worldview reminds me of 14 year old me.

Honestly I think the deciding factor is simply self awareness. If you have the ability, even a little, to step outside yourself and evaluate yourself objectively you don't go down a path like that.

Any adult still hung up on their SAT/IQ etc test is an inherently damaged person. A number on a sheet of paper from X number of years ago does not mean anything. These guys take online personality quizzes seriously and that's sad and scary.

He's really the cousin at Thanksgiving that unironically says "maternal unit, may you please pass me the sodium chloride,I need to season my avian dinosaur". Bro could really just be a mod on r/rickandmorty

also he did not go to high school or college and has never had a job or even run a business, so he has simply avoided many of the normal sources of interpersonal friction that help someone like this get better socialized

with which, like, I empathize, as someone who also had high childhood test scores and also did not finish high school and has never lasted very long in a work-for-someone-else job, but also, I don't think I've ever said that only I was smart enough to do something important

I am far from the first person to observe this, but Yuds stuff is classic auto-didact shit. Part of why we send smart kids off to college is so that they can meet a bunch of people smarter than they are and come to the painful realization that they aren't hot shit. Certainly worked for me.

There is genuinely a problem with Eliezer assuming others are dumber than he is. He will interpret you as dumber about a subject than you are. While writing an oversimplified blog series on the “Simple Math of Evolution” Or replying to Sam Altman saying he’s probably innocent

I guess this is why Peter Thiel pays little shits like this to not go to college and showers them a fuck ton of money.

The funny thing is, this actually happens to Harry Potter in the fanfiction Yud wrote. Guess Yud thought he's built different to the self-insert character he wrote

Oh trust me, lots of them go on to grad school even MORE insufferable, & some of them become professors after that. Just like travel, education is not an antidote to arrogant jackassery, speaking as someone who grew up around academics…I was not surprised by any of the Epstein shit from that crowd.

Yud has a bunch of elaborate explanations for why actually it would be counterproductive for him to get a degree because it would just hold him back to have to explain his brilliance to boring muggles. That's what happens when you don't connect to the larger intellectual culture. You turn into Yud.

I suppose, for the first time, I'm a little bit grateful that I was born into poverty and life beat some humility into me. Turns out there were worse outcomes.

i suppose i was one such kid but i always rated "intelligence" with "have you read things"; the idea that you could declare yourself a world-historical genius but haven't even cracked open Hegel's encyclopedia Logic ... i could never

It is fundamental that these people cannot understand the difference between knowledge and intelligence. Their chatbots are masses of knowledge to be statistically regurgitated on demand, with no intelligence, no understanding of context or truth, and this to them is the highest form of brilliance.

Reading that crap from Yudkowski I thought, 'Didn't this kid ever have chores? A summer job?' By the time I got my working papers at 14 I had jobs as babysitter, mower of lawns, and I had a newspaper route. Plus farm & garage chores. At 14 I started caddying. 2 bags. 18, 27, sometimes 36 holes/day.

Not confusing to me for the same reason that nerds and people onto BDSM have huge overlap, the weird eugenics-y supremacist thought they subscribe to is fully a weird psychosexual fetish system in itself that they rationalize as being objective truth we're all too weak for. So it's just a step away.

"I think my porn is real" is a terrifyingly huge voting bloc in 2026 (possibly only tied for every other year in human history, not sure tbh)

like Aella's party has a requirement that the women are all "prey" and the men are all "predators" and attendance at the party shall constitute standing consent to the party's "standard activity list"

I was mostly shedding that like an ill-fitting cocoon by high school/college, but I will say transitioning really sped that process along.

I also think that kids who are intellectually different enough from their peers in the same sense as a future pro athlete or musician, that's going to be every bit as noticeable. Those kids are going to get some hard knocks at least until their final growth spurt. I don't think Yud was that kid.

A little bit of weed or mushrooms in this dude’s formative years could have saved trillions of dollars, and lives, but no, he was too lame/pretentious to even be invited to do that.

but see, even straigh white gues from well-off families who see themselves as The Most Very Clever in the Room eventually get into top schools, and are then surrounded by kids who were doing graduate level math at age 10 and go, oh shit, this room is *full* of clever people, and ✨uPDatE oUr pRiORs✨

The next step up from that is realizing that if you are credibly able to be described as the smartest person in the room, you are almost certainly in the wrong room! Either because the room is too narrowly focused, or because you have somehow found yourself in an abnormally shallow talent pool.

(Yud's LessWrong has always seemed to me, with my minor in philosophy and my 20-year systems engineering career, to be the epitome of an incredibly shallow pool filled with people who believe that it is the ocean.)

absolutely this. like, in K-12 there were a handful of kids like me who were a grade or two ahead for like math, english, etc.... then at college you truly internalize that basically every K-12 school system has those kids, and that you are truly not as hot shit as you might have thought...

Ive started using this as a metric in my life. If I ever feel like the smartest person in the room, I need to reevaluate, and find smarter people.

If I ever feel like the smartest person in the room, I need to reevaluate, because I'm clearly missing what half the other people are bringing with them :-)

I was the smartest kid in my class all the way through college but I never thought I should be in charge of the world or be the one to change the world or any grandiose shit like that. I just worked hard and got excellent grades. That evil POS on the other hand definitely has a personality disorder

I would guess that these guys have not put themselves in situations where they'd have to learn humility. Right? Yudkowsky didn't even finish high school. People who went through programs with high weed-out rates --engineering or physics or pre-med or architecture -- know they have limitations.

He just sounds so insufferable. Like holy shit, that's not even *actual intelligence* that he's describing. He's maybe trivia smart (and that's coming from someone who is trivia smart, where I can retain information easily but I'm not good at applying it) but not much else.

Yup. You can have top 1% test scores and that just means there's tens of millions of people as smart or smarter than you. Ultimately everyone settles at "mediocre relative to peers" due to selection effects, unless they get really lucky.

The older I get, the humbler I get. I feel like I know nothing sometimes compared to when I was younger & thought I knew everything. Intellectual humility goes a long way. Y'all can feel free to call me out as arrogant swine now, but seriously, domain knowledge doesn't make you smart at everything.

Reading these reminds me so much of my POS uncle and his sons, at least the last time I had any kind of regular contact with them. "X is my favorite Y, therefore it is empirically superior to all other Ys and any intelligent person would agree" is extremely them.

I do not want that kind of person in charge of or to have influence over anything more important than a book club for pretentious assholes. They're so completely convinced of their own superiority, and they can't stop telling the plebs about all their important thoughts - as a service, of course.

Every useful smart person has to figure two things out in their adolescence/early adult years. 1. The smartest kids at your HS school are part of a cohort of 10s of millions at that level. 2. Potential only matters as a child. Competence and achievement are what matter on this vector as an adult.

My experience at (redacted, but will become obvious) capital taught me that basically everyone there learns this lesson - except for the one guy there who really is the best, whose identity I will not divulge. And SBF, who left before he learned risk management I guess

I mean, I agree, but I vaguely recall various libertarian's saying 'why can't we mate with 14-15 year olds we did it in the middle ages and I just don't see too much light between the 2. And I'm like oh, I guess I can't really engage with you intellectually because you only see me as a vessel.

All he needs to do is open up a D&D book and see that Intelligence and Wisdom are two very different stats. "Intelligence is knowing tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad."

Exactly! Both pitiful and ultimate cringe. No self awareness of that fact that they are pampered man-babies Ugh, I just remembered how I left SAT scores on my resume for at least 2 years post college. 🤢

One of the best takedowns of the "rationalists" and Libertarians is in Fargo, season 5: Roy: "I want freedom without arbitrary rules.” Lorraine: "So you want freedom without responsibility? Son, there's only one person on Earth who gets that deal." Roy: "The President?" Lorraine: "A baby.”

Oh good lord do I know that... I tested *cough* fairly high on an IQ test, and was the smuggest little shit to walk the face of the planet. Think Sheldon Cooper without the endearing quirks. Thankfully I grew out of that in high school.
