If one were a little clever, they might even hypothetically be able to use other bits of mesh as "brushes" in conjunction with proportional editing, in order to control the sculpting in very very specific ways.

Blender has a tool called Knife Project, and it not only has a name that's cool as shit (sounds like a super move), but it's actually as cool as its name. Just a little tricky to use. #Blender

If you're learning 3D modeling, I think it's really valuable to watching tutorials and timelapses without trying to replicate what they're doing. Just watch other people work and absorb the different techniques they employ and the ways they solve problems.
