My photos from Kyiv are published in this month’s Marie Claire Australia, illustrating Frances Mao’s excellent and moving report on relationships during the war.

having pleasant premonitions of the AfD taking power nationally just as Germany's vastly beefed up military and intelligence-gathering capabilities come on stream

Really think UK urbanist discourse needs a more sophisticated lens of analysis than complaining about what was genuinely one of the grimmest areas in London becoming, ultimately, significantly more welcoming www.theguardian.com/cities/2026/...

In August 2024 Rodri and Álvaro Morata were rightly banned for one match for singing “Gibraltar is Spain”. Now the Argentine players who celebrated with the “Falklands are Argentine” banner must be barred from the final.

Edvard Munch………. roald dahl…………… odin………….. Harald Bluetooth……….. magnus carlssen..... your boys took a hell of a beating!!!!!!!!!!

Love this. As if there hadn't literally been pogroms against non-white people in NI and massive anti-immigrant protests in Ireland. But yeah, guess the 'Celtic nations' will be massively alienated [in contrast to England] by an anti-immigration UK leader. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

So funny that Merz's Big Labour Market reform involves such monumental unheavals as.. allowing libraries to open on Sundays

If only Jeremy Hunt, former chancellor of the exchequer, had been in a position to reform fiscal policy instead of being forced to merely describe his proposals in a pamphlet like a 26 year old wonk!

Friday was an all-time temperature high in Germany, a record broken on Saturday, and then beaten today. This reality does feel a little discordant with the political debate, which is almost universally about just how far to retreat from net zero.

Not that I don't trust Mr Banker but I had to check this was true and.... Christ on a bike, the brass neck on this fella share.google/UGToAwIdibgp...

the punchline here is that this GB News opinion piece headline ... is written by Kwasi Kwarteng. utterly shameless:

I get endless cold-emails selling me something. Was wondering how many of them are human. The answer turns out to be: none. Updated my LinkedIn profile yesterday. 10 monastic messages today, of which this was the best.

It is genuinely insane that days before the SpaceX IPO Elon Musk's attention is on inciting a race war in a country he doesn't live in

every result on the page is an AI slop listicle. the AI summary on the search page summarises the AI slop listicles. an ever-growing pile of shit

It's a day ending in Y, which means it's time to for a national newspaper to print some boomer's opinions on the housing market, and today's a doozy:

A three-year wait for some other ~stakeholder~ to delay the project further. UK planning in a nutshell.

The comment that pro-Palestinian marches always try and walk past a synagogue is a particularly useful data point for the debate about how those marches intersect with antisemitism

It is certainly much more revealing of the organisers' attitudes than the debate over slogans and maps, which I am quite ambivalent about

Once again thinking of this illustration for a TV report on the first McDonald's to open in the USSR

It’s a hard thing to say but it’s now obvious: Britain has an antisemitism problem. How deep, widespread and violent it is is something I am not expert enough to know. But I’ve been around here long enough to know that Britain now has an antisemitism problem that didn’t exist when I was younger.

I've never been one of those "it's getting too dangerous for Jews to live here" people but this is getting really fucking scary. Not that there's anywhere better to go.

I think it's really underappreciated that a large chunk of people across the world are everyday being served images of the world's worst atrocities, essentially live as they happen, in ways previously only experienced by people on the frontline, who have historically had years of trauma as a result.

Beyond surreal for a *Green* party to be advocating for fossil fuel subsidies that would directly harm the poorest people in the world.

Farrukh@implausibleblog.bsky.social

Zack Polanski says blanket support for everyone for fuel and energy costs, and then claw back through wealth taxes for those who don't need it This is simple, pragmatic and the least bureaucratic way of ensuring everyone who needs support gets it, in the fastest possible way 👏

A fifth less supply is a fifth less supply. If the government loads up on debt to subsidise everyone in the UK using the same amount they were previously using the world’s poorest people, who will will outbid for the remain supply, will physically run out of fuel. It really is that simple.

It's truly amazing to watch the spectacle of the American presidency turn into this sycophantic circus of a tinpot regime.

Trump: "You want to see a stock market go down? Let a couple nuclear bombs be dropped on us, then you'll see a stock market go down. So the stock market has not gone very much at all. It's gone down a little bit. Much less than I thought. And frankly the gas hasn't gone up as much as I thought."
