A thing that i wonder about when i read of these salaries, is could the BBC have gotten rid of her and employed six or seven junior reporters instead? Six or seven younger, less experienced people picking up skills and experience instead.

Believe it or not this video got my book published by giving it to @christhebarker.bsky.social to give to his publisher. Worth a quick watch because it does show you some of the art in the book and communicate some of the insane work that went into it.

Député Thomas Portes: "Look closely at these images. Unbridled police brutality. A female protester being beaten. She is pummeled by riot police (CRS), who kick a defenseless protester while she is on the ground. This is what Laurent Nuñez’s orders lead to." #France 24 October

we should all be pissed off at this btw. if not because sex work is legitimate work and should be treated with respect, then because you should be concerned at attempts to gentrify online spaces as pretext to court investors and force out minorities so those spaces can become part of a portfolio.

The Edwardians used to have a cycle race up this street. Pavements would be lined on either side by gentlemen and ladies, all cheering. It was banned after a plucky winner, gliding down for a victory lap, was so depleted he completely lost control, careened into the crowd and injured many. #Partick

The other day I was bemoaning the lack of UK-based social networks. Then I remembered the the UK invented Friend Reunited, which was ike Facebook, but before Facebook, and better than Facebook. And it just kind of died.

Similarly, the BBC Networking Club was effectively a social network set up ten years before Facebook, and run by an established British public corporation. If the dice of fate had landed differently then whole online world could have been British.

IT'S HERE! My new collection "That Jaud" arrived from Drunk Muse Press & it looks brilliant! Pre-order folk have started getting their copies & you can pick it up from Drunk Muse's website or from me personally at one of my launch events coming up. I really enjoyed putting this collection together.

At least 12 hours after airing and this is not on the homepages of the BBC or the Guardian. How is this not news??? You can understand the Telegraph or the Mail burying it on page 1488 but how are you NOT writing this up??

What I've done in the past is used the British Newspaper Archive search function. Not to read articles, but to count the number of hits, and you can filter by location and by year and some other filters too. www.britishnewspaperarchive.com/search-newsp...

linguistics and media pals: I'm trying to a find a simple interface for my students (UG) to do some rudimentary corpus analysis of newspaper headlines/stories any recommendations? this looks great: search.mediacloud.org

I guess as an academic institution you might have a subscription already, or wikipedia editors get free access too. But I don't use any of those things. I just look for how frequently word is used by each decade, in different regions.

When I'm feeling particularly linguistic I build up a "basket" of words to estimate the corpus size and then I can compare the number of occurrences of specific words to this basket, to get a "normalised" ratio that can then be compared to other things independent of corpus size.

The same thing happened to my mother-in-law, she got talked into having some work done on her roof, and then once the roofing firm had taken all the tiles off, they discovered some major issue that required mother-in-law to hand over lots more money otherwise they couldn't put the tiles back.

Dear Claude, please can you build me a online community website with about fifty human users who regularly chat about subjects I am particularly interested in and are geographically based not too far away so a real-world meetup is feasible, but without using AI.

It’s depressing to see schools use AI to create flyers, banners, & t-shirts. When I was in high school the faculty would come to the art department to have students create these things. I learned so many skills that have followed me my entire professional life. That’s what I thought school was for.
