I extremely do not need a human to be driving my burrito taxi.

“I don’t want AI to replace artists and writers” is a humanist sentiment but “I don’t want robots to replace delivery drivers” just comes across as regressive to me.

i really really REALLY don’t think you should respond to someone getting death threats by saying “this sucks, but it makes sense because the person telling you to KYS has material and mental conditions that are making them lash out” STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR DEATH THREAT ENJOYERS

I see people putting AI in the same bucket as NFTs (speculative technology that will go away when the bubble pops), but I think the internet is the better comp. Sure there's some early bubble-y activity, but the underlying technology is real it's going to dramatically change things.

I keep expecting AI progress to plateau, but with the opus 5.5 release it seems clear that is not happening.

new rule: You can't say "AI doesn't think" until you post 1) a measurable, falsifiable definition of thinking 2) that includes humans by those measurements 3) and excludes AI by those measurements Bonus points for a definition that isn't ableist or dehumanizing to ND humans.

I realized yesterday: the two major sides of the AI debate aren’t “it’s good” versus “it’s bad.” They are “this is strange and uncertain” versus “there’s nothing to see here, you dolts.” Antis often get mad at the suggestion it’s very bad, because embedded within that is the claim it is novel.

Yeah so NYT asked me ~2 yrs ago to write an op-ed about how the Colorado is running dry, & what we should do to keep this exact thing from happening. I said "There's only one real answer. Bill farmers by how much water they use. Duh." NYT editorial staff freaked tf out & cancelled the piece.

This is, and I am not even joking, going to fuck up so many hyperlexic kids. I got accused of plagiarism because I used the word “porous” in a sixth grade paper and that shit sticks with you, if not on the permanent record, then in the childhood.

oh come on

a timberborn/factorio crossover would be funny. the factorio engineer probably thinks beavers with little beaver factories making wooden gears is incredibly cute. timberborn beavers, in a world disrupted by hoomans, are not impressed by the engineer, who had to leave nauvis to learn to grow trees.

factorio engineer: sure, pollution makes water look worse, but it doesn't really make it any less useful or anything? you can still use it for steam power and concrete and stuff. timberborn beavers who just lost outlying crops to a badtide: yes it does, idiot.

As a mediocre artist, I still get to have some social attention for my art, but that's possibly because collaborating with me on a project in my genre is still more fun than wrangling an AI into it, for people without much experience with AI.

ellie lockhart (she/they)@eleanor.lockhart.contact

I think AI in particular disrupts the economic opportunities of people who previously had niche skills that allowed them to build communities based mostly on being the only person who did thing. It opens up tinkering-and-making-bullshit to more people, and this offends medium-effort tinkerers

Sidenote: there's some not-that-creative tasks in visual art that AI still seems bad at, like turning scanned line art into strokes in a vector image.

it's simultaneously true that the average peasant's life had a surprising amount more room for leisure and fun than the stereotype allows for, and that it'd be a life of horrible crushing poverty and toil by any modern country's standard

I bought Nectome's cumulative discount card: nectome.substack.com/p/preservati... Nectome facts: - Won brain preservation prizes - No life insurance needed - You can pick body management prefs later - You can ask them to destroy your body if they fail - Preservation is at permafrost temps

nectome.substack.comPreservation Pre-salesNectome’s preservation services employ a new method for whole-body, whole-brain, human end-of-life preservation for the purpose of future revival.

Also you can stay in the organ donor registry, because they don't do emergency post-mortem preservations, so in circumstances where your organs are usable they wouldn't be able to preserve your brain anyway.

my shader export compression is mightily broken and the effect is eerily reminiscent of trying to make out details in a night sky obscured by light pollution, except the sky now has intermittent complex transforms darting across its surface

Abolish the legal gender marker entirely. No government can be trusted to have a database of which people have changed theirs, no government has any business tracking what your gender is "supposed" to be in the first place.

There is a sustained phishing campaign going on right now designed to steal users' Sendgrid credentials. I've had a dozen pretty convincing emails this week about failed API requests, exceeding quotas, that kind of thing - but this latest one? Wow... This is social engineering on a whole new level.

Putting all the responsibility for the game on a (hopefully AAA-class) GM while minimising players' mechanical authority does not make for a newbie-friendly game.

I am bored of self-proclaimed "RPGs suitable for players new to the hobby", and annoyed with most of their designs and assumptions. I want to see RPGs made for people who have never GMed before.
