"The world is a den of thieves and night is falling. Evil breaks its chains and runs through the world like a mad dog. Therefore let us be happy while we are happy. Let us be kind, generous, affectionate and good. It is necessary and not at all shameful to take pleasure in the little world.”

We should just have like 3 to 5 different building codes in the whole country that each optimize for different things and every jurisdiction can pick one but not modify it

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

This thread is a pretty sobering look into how the building code sausage gets made in the US. We really need the public sector to impose some actual rigor and cost benefit analysis on this process.

so we can do “hey, let’s switch to the ‘affordability and rapid growth’ code, the one they’ve been using in X, Y, and Z for the next five years”

Re the last repost, one of the things that has stuck from my time in the behavioural science snake oil mines was an experiment where if people planned a week of movie viewing they would pick a mix of genres, some 'highbrow' etc but if they picked day to day it was all the same stuff

“Aggregate outcomes are not in general or even usually interpretable as an aggregation of individual preferences.” @interfluidity.com www.interfluidity.com/v2/6846.html

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

nah, anyone familiar with the symbology of the Chicago Flag knows that every way you fly it, it means that you're ten toes down and standing on business

Soren Spicknall@sorenspicknall.bsky.social

If you try to fly a Chicago flag upside down to signal distress it just looks like a normal Chicago flag, which raises the possibility that every Chicago flag you've ever seen was flying upside down to signal distress

I’m stoked to see Circuit des Yeux and Alan Sparhawk perform a live score for the original Nosferatu

Composer Haley Fohr will accompany the classic silent film alongside musician Alan Sparhawk at the Studebaker Theater, kicking off a short European tour. https://bit.ly/4ewHfjE

Wow, I wrote this one a long, long time ago – it's a rant about people going to see old movies so that they can watch them "ironically" and laugh

We can definitely punish our way out of this. Stepped up penalties, increased enforcement, and strengthened prosecutorial powers will fix the current situation.

Pedantically speaking, I’m not convinced a 3d-printed figure made of polymer can properly be called a “statue”

Historical Marker Ahead@historicalmarker.bsky.social

Someone set afire a 3D-printed statue of President Benjamin Harrison at his home/museum in Indianapolis (see markers below). I can’t believe anyone feels so passionate about Harrison to set him on fire. But I also didn’t figure anyone would bother to 3-D print him www.wishtv.com/news/crime-w...

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

I think a lot of things go wrong when we mistake programming metaphors for how the computer works. You might have object-oriented programming but it is only one computer; it's just a way of keeping track of how the program works. Similarly, we'd think about AI differently if rather than "agents"...

I'm on board in principle, but before I commit, I'd like to know more of the details. Is AI going to do it slowly or painfully, or will it be more of an instantaneous thing?

this bit moved me so much that i had to take time to turn it into a video clip

Ken Raining@kenraining.bsky.social

I’m about halfway through this; literally stopped as I pulled into my driveway at the point where Colette starts to say his match with a nine year old is the most important one they will cover this episode. 😆Listen to this episode it’s awesome! 🤼

I’m surprised there’s not more fuss about the room in the new Lucas Museum that displays the skulls of all the actors who have died since appearing in a Star War, with empty niches for those still alive. It’s really creepy.

saw some short form video (i know, i know) of an annoying gen x person reacting (i know) to a differently annoying person from a younger cohort blaming gen x for "the world they left" us and the gen x guy was denying that they were ever in charge

I’ll say it again: Every time Illinois state representatives choose not to expand multifamily housing rights, they admit they’re okay with Texas snatching our electoral votes. Local housing micromanagement is ensuring Republican dominance for years to come. Time for the state to crack down.

Malört is a staple of our history and our heritage — a rite of passage if you want to prove you’re tough enough to be a Chicagoan. When I look back on my time as Governor, I will think of the taste of Malört and all of you who joined in the joy of it.

Are motorists OK? One of them threw a water bottle at me while I was parking my Divvy. Didn’t get a chance to talk with him about whatever was going on with him emotionally, but it must’ve been serious.

It’s like the most perfect, beautiful weather on a Friday night in Chicago and this poor guy is driving around red and mad at bicyclists. it makes me really sad for him.

if i'm described as "deliberately incendiary but often funny" or "actually very nice if you got to know him" after my death, please consider my life a complete failure
