NEW: "It’s been hell."
"I’m dead inside."
"I honestly don’t know if I will ever find work in the U.S. again, let alone D.C."
"It’s akin to screaming into a void."
What is going on with D.C.'s job market? Contributor Abi Newhouse investigated:
Ummm, there's apparently a driver with a Florida tag who has gotten 57 traffic camera tickets in D.C. — including one for driving *141 mph* in a 35 mph zone. And another driver with a Virginia tag that has 405 traffic camera tickets, including going 108 in a 25. Insane.
there's been a huge gender gap in who reads English literary fiction forever. even in the 1950s, when authors were 3:1 male and the academic canonization of the novel was in full swing, 70-80% of readers were women. changing the books won't help, you need to change men.
"If more books were published by men with explicitly masculine themes, would there actually be a wider male readership?"
This is very much in the Platnerian mode that presumes all men are only attracted to content by, for, and possibly about Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor.

I am having a particularly frustrating week, so here’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. The eruption of Sarychev Peak in the Aleutian Islands, seen by the crew of the space station.

The place I donate blood gives points that you can exchange for gas cards which means I actually know the current exchange rate of blood for oil. Blood is going for 20.618 times an equivalent amount of oil.
Authoritative essay by leading election law expert.
On how the Roberts Court's voting rights cases - now, most recently, the Alabama decision - have thrust the country away from multiracial democracy and toward the undoing of the Second Reconstruction.

Direct File was an exemplary model for future civic tech projects. A lot of what the 18F team accomplished could be replicated and extended by a non-profit who was sufficiently funded and I bet a lot of the same people would help you.
New, from me: American taxpayers will spend billions of hours and hundreds of billions of dollars — not to pay their taxes, but to report them to the government.
Thank Trump, who killed Direct File, a free tax high-quality reporting tool that IRS had built. 🧵

A lot of people have asked what the Oakland Review of Books is. One good answer is that ORB is the opposite of whatever these guys have become. Give a thought to subscribing, won't you? www.oaklandreviewofbooks.org#/portal/signup
i've been quite skeptical of manned spaceflight but we have big machines that turn pilots and scientists into poets and i think we should keep using them
We have a very simple solution to universal programs benefiting the wealthy. You claw back the money through taxes on the back end. Everyone has known this for 100 years, but people get to pretend they don’t when it’s convenient for their ideology.
They pay $34 for burgers. Should their fire department service be free? Opening a new fire department in one of NYC's richest neighborhoods has some of America's pettiest journalists asking silly questions in headlines again.🤡
The article acknowledges the fire department analogy, then blows past it
