"I was never ageist, as a kid" "No Jane. But in almost every way, you aren't a very good example of how people are. You used to wear carpetbag waistcoats as a child and bury dead insects, too".

(I did have a little insect graveyard for flies I found dead on windowsills, with pebble headstones. I thought they were at least as important as we are and should be treated accordingly. I stand by this).

Someone has been doing great work clearing vegetation from the prehistoric entrance graves on Kittern Hill (Gugh, Scilly). One of life's greatest pleasures is crawling into an ancient tomb, don't you agree? #TombTuesday

Talk to me, please about Meta. With the new terms and conditions, if you have a buisness page for art or writing, will you stay on facebook and Instagram?

I really enjoyed giving a talk for the Virtual Seminar Series in Precambrian Geology last week on a little #sciart project on the iconic #Ediacaran fossil #Charnia (masoni & brasieri). you can see the talk here and look up the other great seminars on their YouTube channel. youtu.be/PsdixR_j1XI?...

Its inktober (quite some way in!) and this morning I realised I havent touched this, or anything, for over a year. I'd really like to finish it, so aiming for some movement for the rest of this month. Grief and dying steal from you, and there are things to reclaim.

I think maybe if youre broken, and life breaks us all, that the aim is not to be mended, back to where we were. I think maybe it is to let the fractures widen. To let out flocks of birds and old records. To cry at gigs. To become softer and wider. To parcel up what we know and gently give it away.

I think maybe it is to learn to sit with discomfort and to ask it questions. To hold the answers lightly. I thought, when I was a kid, that life would get easier because I would know more. But knowing is heavier and harder. It is knowing you know nothing. And isnt that an absolute fucking gift.

A few years back, the BBC asked me on to talk about asylum, but then the researcher started to panic because I wasn't "balanced" with someone who hated asylum seekers. I guess the BBC's definition of "balance" only goes one way

Alasdair Mackenzie@alasdairmackenzie.bsky.social

Note once again that there is not one pro-refugee included view here - no politician from the Greens or SNP or even the Labour left, no activist or lawyer, and certainly no actual asylum seeker - and "balance" consists of presenting a choice of exactly how vile we should be to people

I am way too online for my own good, and I had an unreasonably large twitter following, and I really *enjoyed* twitter for a lot of years, and yet leaving there and never looking back was maybe the easiest what-felt-like-a-big-ethical decision I've ever made.

Watching a documentary about the emperor Hadrian's visit to Britain in AD 122 There's a lot of AI If you're going to use AI (which you shouldn't) at least get an expert to check it Hadrian's Wall has been studied for 100s of years We don't know what this Wall is 😱 #AI #archaeologyhorror

Goodnight from the Red House Transport Cafe, where Sadie Stowen is finding out the going rate for her soul. Goodnight from the boot boys under Brighthaven Pier, suddenly realising that they aren’t tooled up enough for a ruck with what’s emerging from the sea. Goodnight from Hookland.

I came away to a house on the moor and brought some friends with me. A book about stones. A book about paths. And from Hookland, a book about everything. @hookland.bsky.social very kindly send me a Right to Reside and I brought that too, just in case. The wind here is strong. Who know what it moves.

Not long to go until spooky season, and I'll be doing my bit to contribute to those chills with my online course on WRITING GHOST STORIES this September and October! www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/writing-gh... #ghosts #ghoststory #ghoststories #haunted #hauntings #spooky

eventbrite.co.ukWriting Ghost Stories - 4-week courseA four-week course exploring the essentials of writing a ghost story, taking in atmosphere, characterisation, pacing and much more!

Hello, John Holmes. I came to see you, today. Not at your grave, deep in Shap loam, but here, at your home as the waters shrank. I stood on the cobbles of the path you walked. Stopped at the midden and tried to find a sherd that felt like yours. I watched the sun set with you, over Harter Fell.

I support university students who have ADHD. During the meds shortage: chaos. Missed appointments, late essays, frustration as they tried so hard and found it ten times harder. Lots of tears. As it went on, depression, anxiety. Meds arent a cure but they make life manageable for so many people.

Mic Wright@brokenbottleboy.bsky.social

In the Guardian’s review of ‘The Great ADHD Myth?’, Lucy Mangan writes that the mother of a boy featured in the documentary “decides to keep him off the drugs”. In the end credit sequence of the programme, it says she put him back on the medication “after poor exam results”.

Cockpit stone circle is a scheduled monument. There is archaeology under the surface, and there is peat that doesn't need disturbing. I'm never one to follow a pointless rule. Whatever your belief system, this is illegal for really good reasons.

Let's face it: this wasn't even the biggest scandal *at Cambridge University*. Yet the much bigger story, exposed by Byline Times, has scarcely been picked up anywhere. Of course, that involved white, radical-rightwing professors, so nothing to see here. bsky.app/profile/geor...

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

The Jason Arday story is by no means the biggest scandal at Cambridge University. I'm sure the media is going to pick this up and run with it in just the same way ... Or is the exaggerated CV of one Black professor somehow more important than this?

I dont know what a woman rantingly stomping around a circle replacing sods and chucking uprooted heather out of holes does to your spiritual earth-working, but I suppose we're going to find out.

Last night I drank a whisky and made a model. I was listening to music and grief has numbed me for six months, but music strips that away. A folk singer told her lost mother what it was like without her, and for a little while, I could feel again. And it hurt. My whole body felt it.

At 3am, I am messing with model electrics. Swollen eyes but already, my brain is softening the edges, taking away grief and also joy. These months are flat when they are not violent. When Lee comes to say "go to bed" I say I had a bad night.

But it is not bad to remember how it feels to be cupped in the palm of someone wonderful. It isnt bad to suddenly find them in the night. Grief is, in its way, a connection. Ill take it.

Wave after wave. The thing she said two years before. The night I didnt take enough soup to the hospital. Our last truly lucid moment when she held my face and stroked my hair in a hospital corridor, taking me in, knowing why. I am numb because my body can't hold all of her at once.

Oh did a female academic with an extensive history of study and practice in a particular area of literature make a reasoned critique of a male filmmaker’s movie? I’m sure this will be handled with maximum normality.
