"shoes that look a half-size or so too large"

The New York Times@nytimes.com

In recent months, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy have all been photographed wearing shoes that look a half-size or so too large for them. It’s an affliction — and not one relegated to the Trump administration. nyti.ms/476cwGN

On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast. The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me. But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

My not “not the gestapo” tshirt, has a lot of people asking questions that will get them kidnapped if I find out who’s asking them

Homan: "ICE is a legitimate federal law enforcement agency. We're not out scouring the streets to disappear people or deny people their civil rights or due process."

This is very good and also infuriating because it's the kind of plainly stated condemnation of Trump World's crimes, misdeeds, and excesses people like Schumer should be making every morning noon and night

Even if you don't have time to read all 83 pages of Judge Reyes's opinion barring the Trump administration from rescinding Temporary Protected Status for 350,000+ Haitians, please at least check out the four-page introduction. It's a tour de force: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

If the Democratic Party as an org ran this upcoming midterm campaign on getting a majority so it could impeach and convict Trump, then criminally convict him and put him in prison for the rest of his life, they'd end up with a 2009-2011 style supermajority. But they won't, and they wouldn't.

The USA, where the summary execution of an unarmed man can now be justified by the actual president, because on a separate occasion he kicked the tail light of a "very expensive government vehicle."

Guy who spent his professional life losing to an insurgency: Getting a lot of 'insurgency' vibes from this

Jeet Heer@jeetheer.bsky.social

MAGA military geniuses are talking about Minnesota protestors like they are the Iraqi insurgency, the Taliban, and the Viet Cong all rolled into one.

LLM vendors have stumbled into a commonly misunderstood reality of software: It's one thing to build a technology, and quite another to deploy it in scale to the world. It's probably more difficult to tune an LLM so it doesn't do stuff like this than to develop the technology in the first place.

I hate this shit. I hate this shit on a level that I can't possibly control or accurately describe. I have worked on my own ethos a lot to realize that ontological evil is rare, but holy shit how can you look at this and know that the people involved are fine with it and not remember that it exists

As with so much else in the US economic system, the profits will be privatized and the losses socialized. The SaaS companies will pocket all the money and individual people will be stuck dealing with the technology generating CSAM, revenge porn, and psychosis on an industrial scale.

There are an infinite number of possible inputs and you have to anticipate every possible interaction that could be harmful. You also have to define what is harmful. You have to determine what to do about it. We've already seen how difficult this moderation problem is with pre-AI social media.

Add to that the same economic imperatives social media companies have - prioritizing engagement above all other concerns. This tech isn't going away and I don't think this problem will ever be solved.

Don't know if "ironic" is the right word but it's certainly something that in the game's story, the SPARTAN program that created Master Chief was originally concieved to crush dissent within a fascist empire.

Emma’s post will not age well. And not just because she’s still posting on Elon Musk’s Twitter

People who have zero tattoos should stop telling people why and how people get tattoos. My first tattoo was in the military, and it was my grandfather’s nickname for me: Tigger. Yes, the Disney art, no, it’s not cool.

"The political humiliation of this moment is not limited to the president nodding off or crashing out on camera...Do you want a candidate who supports genocide or one with a Nazi tattoo on his chest?" Great piece by David Roth here.

Funny how the press + white politicians just about never refer to unarmed Black teenagers who get murdered -- like Laquan McDonald, Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis, Ma'Khia Bryant, & younger, like Tamir Rice, Aiyana Jones- as "kids," even though they call 30something racists "kids". 🤔

This man will not be fired for calling for the murder of American citizens, yet multiple journalists/reporters/teachers lost their job for accurately reporting things Charlie Kirk actually said and stood for. But it’s the “violent left” that’s the problem

Brian Kilmeade endorses euthanizing homeless people: "Involuntary lethal injection, or something. Just kill them."

I've yet to see a negative reaction to this WIRED article that actually engages with the content of the article, which takes about 10 minutes to read. This one doesn't even engage with the summarized coverage, which includes a bulleted list.
