Running errands on Ninth Street, and in the spirit of birthday-week briefly wandered into The Regulator. And without fail, there were both anticipated finds and unexpected treasures. If you’re new to Durham, NC - definitely pay a visit to our local independent bookstore, The Regulator Bookshop!

A serious effort here from Olivia and colleagues. I will find the time to read this.

Finally! 🤩 Our position piece: Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... beautiful, gorgeous, stunning, out of this world, incredible

Couple this with various publishers replacing scientists as their chief editors with in-house staff and you have a recipe for disaster.

New blogpost deevybee.blogspot.com/2026/08/acce... inspired by recent depressing experience as a peer reviewer. AI-generated #fraud is getting very hard to detect. #peerreview

Incredible. I will find time to watch this in full.

I was a historian of the atomic bomb decision from 1989-95 and coauthored an 800+ page book on the politics behind the decision. I’ve seen a lot of documentaries, but this is new to me. There were 78 people who survived underneath the explosion. This is how some of them survived. One is still alive.

Wait. They all shake hands at the end? What are we even doing here? He's the US President suing you for $20 billion for reporting on the birthday card he sent his friend the pedophile in which he drew a naked girl & mused about secrets. And they all shake hands?

Remarkable camera angle of President Trump as he listens to Wall Street Journal reporters receiving an award for their investigation into Trump’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein — which they pursued despite Trump’s threats and lawsuit.

Pleased to talk to @gregsargent.bsky.social abt NATO summit. Maybe we can rebuild trust someday, but we'll be on the receiving end of "trust, but verify" and significant hedging for a while. Europe sees Trump as the single point of failure for the West, and doesn't want to be at the whim of the US.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

When a Danish journo nailed NATO's Mark Rutte for flattering Trump while he wrecks the alliance, it captured a larger truth: Europe is realizing a country that elected Trump twice can never be trusted again. On the pod, @profsaunders.bsky.social brilliantly explains: newrepublic.com/article/2128...

My interview: “I came to this country as an infant and became a U.S. citizen,” Roswell Encina said. “So sitting there, on the Fourth of July, I couldn’t help but think about the promise of America and the work still required to protect it.” www.advocate.com/news/people/...

advocate.comMan in viral D.C. Metro photo says he was ‘terrified’ as masked white nationalists surrounded himRoswell Encina, a gay Filipino American civic leader, said the Fourth of July encounter with Patriot Front was frightening and impossible to separate from American history.

An excellent read: worth your time.

Hearn says, very plausibly, that he was arrested just for touching a piece of blue coating that had already peeled off the surface. Which is a hell of a lot more believable than “Olympian randomly decides to vandalize national monument.”

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Breaking news: A grand jury in D.C. has indicted David Hearn, a three-time Olympian, for allegedly vandalizing the newly refurbished Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. More details here:

"Did Lalas enjoy an elite playing career? No. But does he do the background reading that could compensate for his relative lack of standing in a conversation with titans like Henry and Zlatan? Also no. But is he charming or funny or charismatic or otherwise magnetic on screen? Eh, no."

This is incredible. So satisfying. I was going to say it’s “cutting” but it’s more a knifing to the gut or maybe a beheading. www.theguardian.com/football/202...
