He says adopting the international standard would be like speaking another language “and we don’t know what that language is yet but we’re gonna operate that way soon,” which he calls “very scary.” Well sure, if you purposefully maintain ignorance, you’ll be ignorant.

This is a 17-storey apartment in the heart of the Plateau in Montreal. I’ve never heard anyone complain about it or say it ruins the neighbourhood. Why? It was built in 1965. People just got used to it. Many I think don’t even notice it (“there are no towers on the Plateau”).

Want “Paris density”? Let’s legalize six-storey single-stair apartments on every residential lot in every major city.

Kenneth Chan@iamkennethchan.bsky.social

This is Vancouver's very first proposal to build a low-rise, multi-unit residential building on a small single-family lot under the new single-staircase building rules. A 6-storey, wood-frame building with 24 family-sized units. #vanre #vanpoli dailyhive.com/vancouver/21...

Visiting Alterlaa in Vienna this past year was an absolutely surreal experience and the similarities in form and transit integration to Crescent Town (aside from all the green!) are pretty amazing. It’s one of my favourite suburban neighborhoods for a reason!

We had decades to densify areas like Bloor West in more gentle ways and the residents always said no. It drove a housing crisis so bad that the province stepped in and required towers be allowed near transit stations. I doubt the residents will understand it that way. www.thestar.com/real-estate/...

thestar.comA 15-storey tower is dividing Bloor West Village. Will the community be changed forever?Once built, the 60-unit tower will be the only one on the strip. Locals say it will kill the area’s vibe.

The curse of platform heights strikes again: the 113 new battery trains for Lower Saxony will have doors aimed at two different platform heights (presumably 55 and 76 cm) because Germany couldn't manage to unify a standard 📶

In 2016, Leuven made a bold decision: instead of trying to accommodate ever-increasing car traffic, it would change the rules of the road entirely. A decade later, the Dutch-inspired traffic circulation plan has drastically improved the city’s accessibility, liveability and quality of public space.🧵

But I thought Toronto is full!

Alex Bozikovic@alexbozikovic.bsky.social

People are living longer, taking up more space, and having fewer children. Three-quarters of old Toronto declined in population 1971-2021; those areas lost *540,000* people.

The idea that planning should mandate, through regulations, an urban form that mimics market forces (higher demand induced by better accessibility along high-capacity rail, which translates into higher densities) is one of the silliest yet most persistent tropes our profession has produced.

Oh The Urbanity!@ohtheurbanity.bsky.social

While this looks transit-oriented, maximizing access to the subway would look more like circles of residential density around each station, rather than one long string of density down the road.

the scarborough busway should inspire the city to look into longer, more permanent busways on available right-of-ways that can produce rapid transit speeds at cheaper cost and timelines. the one with greatest potential, i think, is finch east. this would transform east-west travel in scarborough.

Same thing on housing. Zoning reform is “just a band aid” — real affordability comes by overhauling how housing is built/owned. Ok, but when can we expect this to happen? 5 years, 10 years, 50 years? If we’re holding off on zoning reform for this revolution, can you guarantee me that it’ll happen?

When discussing transit project delivery we focus on “who to learn from.” But equally important is: “who is entrusted to learn?” “how are you learning?” “What are you learning?” @alonlevy.bsky.social has a great piece on this. pedestrianobservations.com/2021/12/31/i...

The institutional muscle built in South Korea, China, Turkey, etc. over the past 40 years came from deliberate joint ventures, exchanges, and international conferences for staff. Then, the subsequent codification of that knowledge into standards, industry, and education. More to come soon ;)

Too often the North American response to escalating transit costs is to aim lower - hydrogen instead of electric trains, low- instead of high-speed rail. We need to fix the root cause of high costs - onerous permitting, weak state capacity, unreliable funding - not settle for less.
