Rooster in Review: In a way, the notorious conman platforming a pedophile-loving, broke petty criminal is the perfect encapsulation of what I've said about this charlatan vampire since he swindled his way onto the scene. www.rooster.info/p/donna-arth...

This is staggering. Even in the social media startup era of the early Aughts, nobody had losses anywhere close to this as they tried to work their way to profitability.
Even if you believe we can’t afford to lose the AI race, a company isn’t making those losses back without dominating the space as Facebook did w/social. A functional monopoly, owning and controlling what we see and know. What AI company has earned that kind of trust? We are living a cyberpunk novel.
It was not my favorite at the time, but the deeper we go into AI the more the ST:VOY episode “Virtuoso” (about the holographic doctor enrapturing a music-unaware planet with his opera chops, until they write a computer program that does it “better”) is more prescient than I originally thought.

I’m sorry to have to be the bad guy here but we need to recognize that we live in a compressed air thrusters world now. If you’re not finding ways to teach the critical use of compressed air thrusters in your classroom, you’re setting your students up to fail when you could be setting them up to fly

Remember this the next time you read another idiotic piece asking "wHy dO pRoFesSorS aLL vOtE foR DeMoCraTs?" It's a real mystery why more faculty don't back the party that's actively working to destroy them and their work.
After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
"White Bear" episode about media spectacle, public vengeance, shame, and criminal justice was already on the watchlist for my Black Mirror class this spring, and I really need these fools to stop giving me more things to assign/cover.

When ISIS killed my friend James Foley on camera they put him in an orange jumpsuit as a direct reference to images of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Not fucking interested my government having a fucking propaganda CONVERSATION with tomorrow’s terrorists, thanks.
Hard to overstate how much Hegseth's execution stream mirrors the U.S. military's traditional description of ISIS propaganda: broadcast killings designed to send a message, strike fear and create a social media spectacle. Will almost certainly be repurposed by online terror cells
One reason I teach students to scratch the surface below benign-sounding labels like "longtermism." What Altman is saying here is really just how you implement the definition, the meaning distilled from neutral-sounding wordplay. AI elites hide behind labels because the meaning is toxic in democracy

“[T]hey delight in putting their cruelty on display. The same impulses that have moved administration officials to show off deportees in a torture prison are now moving in the direction of creating snuff films on the public dime, for public consumption.”

Young teenagers are less likely to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual than a few years ago, according to a new analysis. “It really does look like a free fall,” Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology, said. “But what’s causing it is unclear.”
Headline looks worse than the actual study (link: tinyurl.com/4xj4hm2f), in that AI systems allegedly are neutral but still elicit same old biases. In my human-centered AI classes I take the approach that thinking about sentient AI misses the point. How we use these systems is the revealing thing.
Because, you know, it says a lot about who they are that they would spend so much time stumping for a bot's feelings while staying silent on real abuse of real people. I mean, ...
Anthropic banning “abusive or cruel behavior” toward Claude in its new usage policies is proof to me that tech companies are going to moderate violence against AI before they ever moderate violence against women and minorities
