WORK UPDATE 📢📢
I've been working with @ko-op.com on some social media/video content as part of the team for their new game Young Suns! It's been a blast getting to know everyone and watching the game change so rapidly over these few weeks. Check it out ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Thinking about updating my portfolio with some shit that says "ever since I was a little boy I've dreamed of doing marketing" so everyone knows to never trust anything I say
Unfortunately I really like this job a lot and want to be great at it, but 20 years ago I was like "building robots would be cool" where'd my whimsy go

BREAKING: Electronic Arts is cutting 400 jobs and shutting down BioWare, the legendary development studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
I'm sad anytime ground starts to get ceded because enough widdle guys who are just twying to make it in this big world (🥺) can't have a backbone. it's "a little vibecoding is okay" today and then "it's just background assets" then "what are they supposed to model all the characters by hand?"
Every day that passes I stand by this more. Even if I was unemployed and money wasn't real I'd never be able to keep up just with the stuff I'm deeply interested in. If the tradeoff is More Shit or Fewer People Making the Same Shit, this is a net negative.

Lots of good reasons to be frustrated with the rise of genAI but the idea that it'll accelerate our ability to make More Stuff is driving me crazy. We simply do not need More Stuff! and certainly not Faster!
Opinion: Xbox already has a marketing team and (unless I'm mistaken) journalists are not on its payroll
A conveyer belt of toothless Asha Sharma profiles have shown one thing: reporters who get access must do better
I have no answers but if we care about a viable path forward for small/idiosyncratic/manmade games we have to stop wondering what daddy Valve is going to "do" about it
the REAL uphill battle is that compared to other mediums, gaming has ALWAYS been atomized. you don't have spaces like movie houses and comic shops. even arcades aren't about 'taste.' its scenes are often competitive or industry. this blueprint is going to be all-new.

we're all kind of waiting for a 'letterboxd moment' (not a letterboxd-like platform, that already exists) where generations suddenly start shining to discovering things, developing their own taste, and yes in a way that commercial enterprises can learn to love as well
i know we are all aware we are up to our knees in slop but next fest is maybe the most tangible/hellish example of it so far. got actively distressed while browsing the demos last night
Something invented during COVID that exploded in success and has become completely untenable but no one's really sure what else to do so we all just kinda go "that's crazy" every 4 months and hope it stops being bad? Well, luckily this is the only instance of that!
While sad about what KO_OP is going through rn I am excited that I am co-directing again and helping guide some internal pitches. The team is cooking up some really exciting ideas
someone should take all these new games journalism outlets and bundle their best articles together into one big collection every month. maybe add some pictures and format everything all pretty. make it physical, ship it to my house. *bzzzt* hold on i'm getting a call
Shoutout to all the places that send me an e-mail that's all their articles plus some other stuff they think I should read @mothership.blog@jank.cool best however-many-dollars-per-month I've spent
I've got about 2 months left on Young Suns and was trying to find out how to talk about being furloughed, showing off all the work we put into the character creator and having some fun 🌟 So starting this video series ^^
NEW VIDEO! More rapid-fire recommendations from this October's Steam Next Fest (and guests from the Sonic Amatuer Games Expo) featuring Artius: Pure Imagination, Hyper Bun Buster, Militsioner, and many more 👀

Have absolutely zero time to cover Next Fest this time around, but I've got a big, bruised, and bloody thumbs up for action game/beat-em-up fans:
Knuckle Paradise bangs.

So torn on Next Fest as a tool for showcasing unique ideas. As games with genAI assets have started to take up more and more space during the event, the focus gets put on games that are obviously polished and have the time and money to present at their very best among a sea of trash.
That divide has kind of always been there, and has been widening (not a problem unique to Steam during Next Fest either), but this was the one time where truly weird, absurd, and unique ideas got a chance to showcase next to the big kids. Now it's like... idk, do I want to risk installing malware?

And if you're more of a Reader than a Fighter, Curse of Resthaven has got the juice. Wildly ambitious narrative roguelike, which is a combo I've always felt we could use more of.

#NextFest starts tomorrow! It's the time to play some indie weirdos, odd experiments, new contenders, dark horses, riders and runners. This 30-game selection is a rich mix: maybe something here will turn out to be the one.
Trying to convince my family that they should babysit our son because my wife and I have to beam mental illness into our brains for 2+ hours (watch that new Nathan Fielder movie)
Penguin Colony is a vital work of confrontational art. A game that reclaims Lovecraft’s words and turns them against his own beliefs. If it looks like a gag game (cosmic horror March of the Penguins) from the outside, know that it very, very much is not. My review. www.polygon.com/penguin-colo...
We’re making the tough decision to delay our Steam demo and release of Young Suns to 2027 to ensure the game is as amazing as we know it can be.
Thank you so much to everyone for your support and patience while we continue building the game with you!
Addiction by Design was published all the way back in 2012 and I think it’s the best (and absolutely devastating) book about the mechanics and economics of the predatory gaming industry
It wasn’t even about video games, but you could map it to our sphere almost 1-to-1
While a lot of the high level concepts regarding manipulation and engagement tinkering are likely true, they've also ALWAYS been true and we've known it for decades because very smart people did the research and studied this shit
I know everyone's sharing that video of the recomped puzzle game proving the predatory design of the mobile space, but I think we need to be a little more critical of what exactly we're being told in this new era of AI recomps
Watching everyone take the words of someone interpreting a slopcomp so literally is hilarious. there's just objective proof of games doing this that goes back decades what are we doing

I'm sorry, an AI guy telling you "The wool is being pulled over your eyes" while simultaneously owning a huge ass yarn factory will never not be funny. You're literally part of the problem my guy.
No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads
