Freelance anime reviewer for ANN and local grunt of the Dub Talk Podcast. I am very opinionated. You have been warned

[Review] My inner teenager is glad to see this show animated in however limited a capacity, but I‘m getting increasingly terrified the production is going to test the limits of my nostalgia.
😥 Rest in peace to an absolute MASTER of manga art.
It's been such a special pleasure to work with Chiba's art on Ashita no Joe... to be able to examine his linework, tones, angles, & visual "mood" up close & in great detail. His art is truly beautiful & has a real depth. A real inspiration.
Go see Wildwood. Seriously, don’t wait—go see Wildwood. What a piece of art. The love for the manual craft, for story that doesn’t hold back, for filmmaking that is not here to answer to stockholders, it weaves all through it. Incredible stuff.
So uhh...yeah this is kind of a slap in the face to the folks on the editorial team at ANN to have to be associated with any AI shit, and I hope this ad gets taken down as quickly as possible because this ain't it
... On the urging of friends, I'm breaking that silence
I respect ANN's editorial team highly. They're incredible writers and creators who work tirelessly to keep the anime world informed while adhering to the old ways
This does not reflect on them
This advertorial campaign, though, is a disgrace
So I kinda got the impression from the episodes I watched for Preview Guide that DB Super Beerus was being made purely for the Z crowd who only wants Dragonball to be "cool and serious" and hearing it apparently removed the gags where Vegeta humilates himself to appease Beerus seems to cement that
to keep it more in line with its gag manga roots so having the first "new" DB piece of media since his passing aim to be as self-serious as possible doesn't bode well for having his legacy preserved going forward
Anyway I guess I can now upgrade my opinion of this show from "it's existance is kinda worthless" to "Toei and Shueisha's executives should be on their knees at Toriyama's grave begging for forgiveness"

I'm not like SURPRISED if that's the case but it is depressing/kinda gross considering that between the Super era films having low gag oriented stakes and the entirety of Daima, it's kinda clear that at least on some level, Toriyama was getting a little exhausted of DB being too serious and wanted
I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
WILDWOOD: kind of insane that they made a film of this scale, almost like a cartoon fairytale version of a mid-20th century epic movie. too much story crammed in, I think, but I really dug it anyway. See it on the big screen!
All eyes are on LAIKA's acclaimed sixth feature Wildwood, which is estimated to have an $11 million opening weekend, via distributor Fathom Entertainment. #laika#wildwood#travisknight#calebdeschanel
So I just came out of Wildwood and I have to ask...did the heads at Laika blackmail someone at the MPAA or hold their families hostage? Even knowing Laika stuff is usually more mature this doesn't feel like a real American animated movie. Clearly some dark forces had to be at work here.
Anyway that's my convoluted way of saying this fucking ruled and if it doesn't take Best Animated Picture at the Oscars everyone at the Academy should be subjected to atomic wedgies
Really interesting that patriarchy and inherited trauma were such a big part of Part 6’s themes…only for Steel Ball Run to turn into the skid and explicitly be about these institutions, the different ways society expresses them, and how hard it can be to break out of them.
[Review] With the berating thematic heart of Steel Ball Run now laid bare, the race can really begin and I feel so lucky to be alive at a time when I can experience this story in this way.
Before working on Digimon Adventure, Director Kakudou was in charge of the first Yu-Gi-OH! anime at Toei.
There haven't been many interviews about that time and the transition from the Toei Anime and Duel Monsters, so this whole thing was a big surprise to me.
So nine episodes in, it feels like animation quibbles aside, Seven Havens is the most focused Avatar's felt since ATLA. There's a much better handle on where it's going than what we got with Korra's format half the time and I respect the current commitment to not having any clear cut antagonists
"You just want the 'perfect' candidate" is bullshit. I want a candidate who supports the bare fucking minimum - respect for the basic human rights of every person. If you can't meet that EXTREMELY low bar, that's on you for being a piece of shit.
If that makes me a "purity princess," so be it.
Also you can still absolutely get a real ass PC for like $1200-$1800 dollars. Go to Microcenter and the nicest nerd you’ve ever had a retail experience with will hook you up with an ugly but functional PowerSpec. Things are bad but they still sell computers at stores.
Sorry still thinking of $1,200-$1,800 dollar console just conceptually. Those are Real Computer numbers. You can just get a real computer for that kinda cash. The entire premise of the console is “this is a baby computer you don’t control but it’s standardized and affordable” but they can’t do that.
I will never fucking shut the fuck up about UBI. I truly believe most people aren't "lazy" and it would be easier to be fully productive with access to UBI full stop. When people aren't struggling heavily to survive, they can actually do things. Shocking a concept I know~
What would you do if you were guaranteed $1,300 a month for an entire year?
The New York Times followed recipients of such payments who were part of a universal basic income pilot program in the San Francisco Bay Area.
We truly do not hate Manabu Otsuka enough for whatever bullshit that befell Ice Adolescence causing us to lose one of the most talented female directors in the anime industry
other adaptation they've worked on has been by production committee. They've only done a handful of original projects since and none of them have been pushed by the studio nearly as much as something like Jujutsu Kaisen so it's clearly not THAT much of a priority for them
Again, he's probably not lying outright, but there's definently more to that story than we'll ever be made privy to unless Sayo Yamamoto comes out of hiding in some fashion
We truly do not hate Manabu Otsuka enough for whatever bullshit that befell Ice Adolescence causing us to lose one of the most talented female directors in the anime industry
A) Some money is better than no money and it's giving the studio another project to work on so even if he felt they were being shortchanged it sounds super fucking bizarre to be so dismissive of work that can at least help keep the lights on while also trying to get a better deal out of it
B) If the issue was more ownership for projects, it doesn't really hold up under scrutiny considering that MAPPA has been a largely work for hire studio ever since. Sure they were able to get full rights for Chainsaw Man but that's been the exception rather than the rule and every

Continuing this: The explanation he's given about how YoI wasn't that big of a success for MAPPA financially has always seemed kinda suspect. Not because I don't think he doesn't believe it but because it's odd when you consider the following:
The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot
A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

graphics beyond the ps4 were a mistake. none of this shit is sustainable anymore. every single Big Game costs one billion dollars to make and has to make 5 billion to be profitable and it also costs $100 nobody has and also needs to have an infinite postgame and also is forgotten in a week
Sure, Mass Effect is dead and buried at the hands of the stupidest and greediest company in the history of the industry, but let's all take solace in the fact that GenAI is actively poisoning every facet of the art that keeps our souls from withering on the vine.
