If you're still pondering, a few tickets are available for my online salon with Jon Evans on Interintellect tomorrow, Tuesday October 27th. We'll be talking technology, history, mythology, Renaissance, Vikings, the works! buff.ly/gghx8lI

For a few years now I’ve been floating the idea that theatre is the art form of the future because sharing physical space with people is increasingly precious. Here’s a new reason: there’s no generated slop on the stage. #TheatreIsHuman

In 9 yrs time Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None will enter the public domain, at which point I’ll finally be able to self-publish my masterpiece “10 Little Frat Boys,” in which 10 former bros are lured away from their CEO desks & senate seats 4 a superfun weekend on a luxury island estate.

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

Been buying a lot of CDs lately. Even bought the Boy a CD player and he's on board, too. We've been trading CDs and going to used record shops together. Physical media, folks. It's just so nice to *hold* things.

Let me ask for your help. New baby is here and we couldn't be happier, but we also have a sick cat and expenses are piling up. I offer a variety of services, and if you can hire me, that would be great, but you can also help by helping me reach more people. Shares appreciated!

No reading experience compares to the intense reading of a book I’m about to translate: I’m examining what the words and sentences and rhythms do to me, anticipating how I might deal with them but making no decisions yet. I’m feeling for patterns, seeking threads. It’s beautiful.

You deserve a portrait that you like, made in a way that's enjoyable, even if you don't like being in front of the camera. I make portraits on location across Tokyo. Make an advance booking now and get ¥10,000 off my regular rate. Let's make something great together.

A thing that would be great is if artists shared with translators what they're flashbacking to. They know! They have those pages bookmarked! They took notes! They could just tell me so I don't have to spend the better part of an hour looking for two lines of dialogue from ten volumes ago.

On the one hand, I would love to blog/write/create more. On the other, I have to do at least 4,000 characters of translation a day for the next 6 months, write three talks for next month, and take interview requests from media for said talks. Private stuff is falling way down the priorities list...

So it turns out there’s no realm of “hungry ghosts” in early Buddhism. The Pali is petti, which Bodhi translates as “afflicted spirits”, and I as “ghosts”: both are dead wrong. Petti means “paternal”. This is the old Vedic “domain of the forefathers”.

Well, fever spiked to 38 yesterday morning. went to the doctor and he didn't even give me a flu test. Just prescribed Tamiflu and sent me home, and today I'm feeling fine. Early action saves the day. The boy is also fully recovered, thank goodness.

THE PEN: A HUMAN HISTORY is a sprawling, glorious journey through the history of the humble-yet-mighty pen. He explores how pens were designed, the inks they used, famous examples, attempts to turn them into weapons and spy gadgets, and their cultural impact. Great book!

I'd certainly read a good new anthology of Edogawa Ranpo's best short stories.

issue #6 of Monkey, the mag of new translations of Japanese fiction, has a banger of a translation of the popular & creepy story "The Human Chair," by Edogawa Rampo, w fab translation by Jeffrey Angles. The translator's note clears up some wild glitches in the older translation--very recommended!!!

I am reminded that I forgot to pay this year's SoA fees by learning that the SoA has signed an "ethical AI use" charter and, huh. Past me might have been on to something? Because there is no ethical Generative AI/LLM use in publishing, at any level. Nothing ethical about such tech from the start.

Chania, where some of the oldest Minoan settlements have been unearthed—pre-Knossos, pre-palatial. Where we saw a rare depiction of a Minotaur & learned about the island’s huge marine history & visited the temple of a Jewish community that set up here in 300 BC. Amazing.

I am deeply considering buying an electric vehicle because it's looking like local infrastructure is improving and the driving ranges are also within acceptable limits now. I am also not fundamentally against buying a Chinese BYD, but hot damn the Suzuki E-Vitara rides like a dream...
