I've complained on here a few times about synteny plots that are harder to read than they need to be. I decided it was time to actaully do something about it: introducing SynTangle, a tool for untangling whole-genome synteny plots github.com/Hanliconius/... 1/

github.comGitHub - Hanliconius/SynTangle: On synteny plots, intrinsic tangledness is real, layout tangledness is noise. This tool is for removing layout tangledness. On synteny plots, intrinsic tangledness is real, layout tangledness is noise. This tool is for removing layout tangledness. - Hanliconius/SynTangle

I hate to do this with real data, but this is a persistent data vis issue in chromosome synteny riparian plots that we Need to get better at. Left, a synteny plot published today. Right, a rearranged version with exactly the same gross arrangement but with reordered chromosomes:

Rupert Kirkwood, who took this photo, has now made some calculations, and estimates the tuna in it is between 7 and 8 feet long and weighs roughly 200kg.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

There aren't many days when you can kayak off Start Point, renowned for one of Britain's most dangerous tidal races. But yesterday the stars aligned, so I bunked off work. Delighted to see Rupert Kirkwood (the Lone Kayaker) out there. He took this picture of me +1. Before you ask: yes, it's real. 🧵

1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria. 2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae. 3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish. The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists following their curiosity, and this is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!

El Niño strengthening into unseen territory. The Niño3.4 region just reached a +3.0 °C anomaly (relative to the 1991–2020). Such a warmth has never been observed in September, and it's only a few hundredths of a degree away from the 2015 all-time record.

A quote I always return to is from University of Chicago geoscientist David Archer: “I have a feeling that by the time we get close to 2°C we’ll think it’s pretty insane we ever thought that that was a target to shoot for.”

Elizabeth Kolbert@elizkolbert.bsky.social

A simple point that surprisingly few people understand: "The longer we wait to reach net zero, the higher the eventual peak temperature will be, and the worse the associated damage. Warming is now nearly 1.4C above pre-industrial levels. Imagine summers when it gets closer to 2C."

Science has a communication problem. Like the quiet employee who assumes their performance will be noticed without ever advocating for it, science often expects evidence to speak for itself. It doesn't. In an attention economy, silence loses to spectacle.

This is the key. Thinking up new ideas is never the bottleneck - it's all the institutional slow downs: Grants take years, purchasing approvals, sponsored projects office need so many docs & let's not forget how long it takes our animals to breed. AI doesn't solve the most important bottlenecks

Ran Blekhman@blekhman.bsky.social

Everyone says AI will accelerate science. I don't think it will -- at least not in biology, and at least not soon. New post where I explain why, and how the productivity paradox can be resolved: blekhman.substack.com/p/why-ai-wil...

Tutkimusrahoituksen räikeä poliittinen ohjaaminen on pöyristyttävää.

BAN THE PERVERT GLASSES

Wera Hobhouse MP@werahobhouse.org.uk

Men are using Meta AI glasses to secretly film women at beaches, shops, on the street & on nights out. They then post these clips online where they receive a barrage of misogynistic abuse. I’m campaigning to make this behaviour an offence. Women deserve to feel safe in public spaces.

Clear your mind for moment and understand this. We are altering the very #climate of the planet in a way that's dangerous for our own survival and the stability of our ecosystems. With only a few exceptions, our politicians are not only looking the other way but actively making the problem worse.
