It is a little disconcerting that so many people who know a lot about LLMs on a technical level appear to go a little insane. It would be like if there was a really cool and effective new kind of pen, and for some reason about 40% of the people involved in the pen making process went mad.

John McBride reposted

plenty of people run llm based agents with powerful models and do not end up hacking anyone. this is not an ai alignment problem, it is an openai being routinely criminally negligent as a company problem

ponder@ponder.ooo

calling this "misalignment" instead of "negligence" is an accountability dodge. we already have laws about cyber crimes and there's no scale of ML model you can incorporate into your code that makes you not responsible for running it

Sometimes a drug trip is a profound experience where you realize that you’ve been carrying pain in your heart for years, that you can forgive yourself. Other times you come up with a concept called “gay money” (money that’s gay) and you text your friend “gay money” days later. Both are healing. ❤️‍🩹

And like the harms caused by the collapse of skilled physical labor and explosion in unfettered capitalist growth (child labor, factory slums, extremely dangerous working conditions), history will remember the collapse of knowledge work for similar harms (depression, high unemployment, etc.)

Ethan Mollick@emollick.bsky.social

Industrialization of knowledge work is going to be as disruptive a shift as industrialization of physical labor was. As then, once craft-driven fields are under pressure to produce greater volumes of product using machines while using less of the craft that made the work interesting & meaningful.

Every dollar that goes to this shit is money not going to deserving projects in the Linux ecosystem. DHH has been open that his goal is to turn Linux into an environment that excludes minorities. Omarchy is the software arm of a fascist project. Do not fucking collaborate with them.

📼 We recently open sourced and announced cassettes for tapes: our free and open system for managing, querying, modifying, and doing whatever the heck you want with your AI session data!!! Long live open and free AI systems! papercompute.com/blog/cassett...

papercompute.comThe Anatomy of a Cassette - Paper Compute Blogtapes captures your AI agent data, and a cassette is a small service that adds your own capabilities on top of it, served through the tapes API. This post walks through building one end to end: the AP...

Back in 2019, I wanted a way to bring Kubernetes Prow style chat-ops to many of the Pivotal and Cloud Foundry projects I was working on. It quickly became a popular lite-weight alternative to Prow at Pivotal and within Microsoft and Red Hat.

Then, when you put it in the kiln to bisque fire, it explodes because you didn’t take the time to wedge air bubbles out, you didn’t let it dry leather hard, you fired too high a temp, or you used clay with impurities. yes, with AI, just like pottery, requires a a lot of planning and thought.

Brittany Ellich@brittanyellich.com

In the past, building software felt a lot like constructing a building. There was a lot of discussion in advance, planning, organization. Now it feels a bit like making pottery. There's a few rough passes to get the general shape, then iterations to smooth things into the final thing.

I finally looked into why the For You sqlite db file has been growing to be quite large - 589GB. To prevent the unlimited growth I regularly delete likes older than 90 days. The size of the "ratings" table should be stable (there are ~20M likeds per day). Turns out another source of growth is...

Required reading. Seeing the way DevRel has twisted into this grotesque form of marketing and conference-led-sales is really sad. I would argue that DevRel, maybe now more than ever, is incredibly important. We (developers) are an especially capricious bunch: we must be shown the way.

Hi, friends. The last 6 years have been a blast, but I just don't like being on The Internet anymore. I'm leaving DevRel, and I wrote a little bit about why. Look after yourselves, and each other. Love, Salma

> We must demand that AI labs open source their models ... We must demand that local inference, agents, and workflows be open and free. We must preserve the right to build with intelligence without asking permission. If I am not free now, when?

Open weights are not open source. From the World's Fair floor, @johncodes.com makes the case for why free software must reckon with frontier AI. In The Daily Context: dev.to/dailycontext...

the problem is not that it’s free software (free to fork, free to study, free to modify) run by a rag tag group of maintainers - the problem is it’s the literal backbone of all modern digital infrastructure and should be considered “too important to fail”. So yeah, when rsync vibes, it’s concerning.

Andrew Lilley Brinker@alilleybrinker.com

Regarding the rsync thing: the software is provided as-is.

how we made the new Obsidian Web Clipper icon

I enjoyed collaborating with Adam Whitcroft on this icon. Hope you like it!

Two of my favorite tools were merged together, Obsidian and DuckDB. @mehdio.com created a plugin to run and show inline SQL queries locally, in-memory, or even on remote files via http, or remote DWH MotherDuck. Amazingly, it allows Obsidian to "freeze" remote results in offline Markdown notes.

My fav projectbluefin.io feedback: "I just want to add that honestly, I think people underestimate the degree to which there is also a large contingent of highly intelligent and technically proficient software people that don't want to fucking deal with Linux's bullshit either."
