70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

I wonder why POTUS hasn't already asked his billionaire buddies at Alphabet to "do me one favor, though," and block Kimmel's YouTube channel. Is it because Paxton is a sloppy dresser? Are Alphabet hedging their bets by not complying in advance? ... or is it to identify viewers?

I listened to Claire Stapleton's audiobook ("Don't Be Evil") over the weekend. Pretty good on the whole. The vibe of "downfall from the feel of optimism" (still palpable when I started in 2011) to "just another megacorporation with all that implies" (when the book ends in 2019) resonated strongly.

"Mistakenly, we thought that by just introducing artificial intelligence and ingesting the design requirements that we had, that that would produce a high-quality product." Holy cow, Ford bought the AI hype, believing they could go "hey computer, make me a good car" and it would.

Ford has rehired hundreds of senior engineers after replacing them with AI backfired and has cost the company billions of dollars. AI adoption is blamed for Ford being the most recalled automaker in the U.S. with 51 recalls covering over 11 million vehicles in the first half of 2026 alone.

Bluesky is good many things. But it’s pretty bad at sharing pieces of writing that are not about political anger but it’s worth your time to take a few minutes – more than a few minutes honestly but it’s worth it – and read this. And then share it. Like I’m doing now.

I asked A.I. to complete my novel using my own writing style and it did my laundry, went shopping, cleaned the kitchen and spent the rest of the day dicking around online.

It would be a shame if this interview that CBS wouldn't air -- which happens to be on YouTube instead -- got massive views because of the government censorship. You probably shouldn't pass it around, Brendan Carr might be unhappy.

LateNighter@latenightercom.bsky.social

Stephen Colbert blasted Brendan Carr after FCC scrutiny led CBS to pull an interview with Texas State Rep James Talarico. Instead, 'The Late Show' posted it to YouTube.

“It’s pretty black and white. I mean, it’s on a plaque, you know, at West Point,” [Senator Mark Kelly] said, referring to the Loyalty to the Constitution plaque... “When the law and orders are in conflict, you follow the law.” How long before they remove that plaque, I wonder.

I worked on a software engineering contract at PacBell in San Ramon for a few months in the early 90's. Scott Adams was still working there, though his star had definitely begun to rise, and he was beginning to see a real income from it. "Dilbert" cartoons were visible in every cubicle. /1

Scott had told his manager to lay him off first, in lieu of any of his co-workers, since he could now get by on his cartooning work if he had to. That's the Scott Adams I choose to remember, not who he later became. The good is oft interred with their bones. /3

PacBell had seen wave after wave of layoffs, and there was no end in sight. A difficult adjustment for a workforce who were used to working at a utility, still celebrating employees' 30- and 40-year anniversaries every week or so. /2

I'm wondering how long we have before the billionaire-owned platforms simply refuse to share video uploaded by ordinary people, or worse, serve up a non-stop torrent of AI-generated fantasy that supports the administration's narrative.

In case you were wondering where this Administration stood on the topics of trust, safety, and moderation. Getting in the way of their ability to manufacture truth, or exploit your user base, is now a crime your entire family will be held accountable for.

Holy shit. Reuters reporting that new admin instructions on visas are if you worked at a platform in trust & safety or content moderation or on fact checking or online safety at an platform you *and your loved ones* are ineligible for H-1B visa. www.reuters.com/world/us/tru...

There is still a chance. Please make your senators do the right thing. I really enjoyed those few days of feeling not totally demoralized.

Allison Gill@muellershewrote.com

There’s still time to call senators. Let me explain. Sorry not sorry about the cat. He’s also really upset about this deal.

Whike I've enjoyed the work of Gov. Newsome's crack social media trolling team in the past, I hope they don't lower themselves to responding to the poo-bomb video in kind. As the old punch line goes, "because the pig likes it."

It seems weird to me that Trump disliked the Time cover because of neck folds. I disliked it because it made him look serious and statesmanlike, instead of how he usually comes across: deranged, incoherent, and bloated, with dandelion-fluff hair and splotchy, poorly-applied orange makeup.

I wonder if we could move the entire cult and their orange guru to an isolated village, where all they see in the media is AI-generated triumph: straight White Christian nuclear families, victorious troops trampling lesser peoples under the boot. They could play golf and leave the rest of us alone.
