A few comments on Israel's exit polls. 1. The current government has been defeated, falling from 68 seats to 50. They lost about a quarter of their seats. They have no route to form a similar government. 2. The anti-Netanyahu opposition has 70 seats out of 120 - its highest ever result.

“Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” 💯

Rafa Sales Ross@rafiews.com

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

We all understand the intent. The challenge is to stop them.

Democrats are preparing to investigate Trump's agreement to import Russian diesel if they regain control of Congress, Axios reports. Lawmakers urged US banks and several ports to preserve Russian diesel deal records, warning the imports could violate a 2022 ban and fund Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The BBC would say they’re representing the polls, and the support Reform has in them. I would say the support Reform has in the polls is because they’re over-represented on the BBC. 🤷‍♂️

Framing is all important. R4 WatO presenter yesterday began a piece 'the doctors are going on strike...again!'. Meanwhile I switched off Today earlier as Justin Webb spoke of cutting benefits to disabled and NEETS as though it was factual that these are unaffordable.

With the clear evidence of Meta interfering with Brazil, I want everyone to understand that these algorithms are not simply the product of some neutral 'marketplace of ideas' but an active choice in the part of tech capitalists (and their executives.)

Bolsonaro's loss is not just a loss for Bolsonaro. It's a loss for Trump. For Musk. For Milei. For Netanyahu. For Farage. For Meta and Zuckerberg. For the meat barons, the fossil fuel corporations, and the rest of the neocolonial looters. And it is a massive win for humanity and the living planet.

This went on for the rest of the full hour, at which point the BBC apologised for having to go to the weather and urged viewers to follow continuing live coverage on iPlayer. Forty-one minutes of unfiltered, unchallenged propaganda by a far right party with 8 MPs, now third in the polls. Discuss.

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

🧵 Wow - this article is bordering on unhinged! Apparently the BBC is akin to a “North Korean re-education camp” for teaching children about net-zero and covering both the pros AND cons of immigration Join me for a masterclass in cherry-picking and context stripping to brainwash your own readers👍🏻

💯The case for democracy is not that voters are always right, or wise, or good. It's that they can correct their mistakes. That's why it's so dangerous to have billionaires controlling the media or regulating the flow of information. It shuts down the immune system of democracy.

Rob Ford@robfordmancs.bsky.social

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

I see the BBC that impartially blurs political symbols, slogans and logos of all kinds has entered its “you don’t get on camera without wearing the symbol of the Royal British Legion” period again

Some great replies to this. My list: telephony, cars, printers and hard drives, cancer survival. But in the UK we still cannot get trains to run on time or house and feed all inhabitants properly.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I've noticed very little poppy wearing here in Southern England. Is this some sort of policy on the part of those who market them? Surely it cannot be that Trump's wars are making people rethink their militarism? Btw my father and grandfather fought in major 20th C wars. They did not approve of war.
