Early this year, I visited Ingram, a TX town of ~1,900, to check out a tip. The area was starting to recover from its worst flood in a century. But as Latino workers drove to jobsites to help rebuild, the tipster said, a cop in a black Dodge Charger kept stopping them ... 🧵

Got contacted by one of these! It sounded legit until they started asking for money to design crappy AI-generated flyers. #scams 🗃️

Really interesting article on the notorious book club scam and the massive infrastructure behind it: the relative impecunity of writers is no barrier as they’re such a great target in every other way

Been thinking a lot about the recent papers arguing that demographic trends in criminal behavior mean that we are likely entering a period of sustained prison pop declines. I think we may be heading for that too. But I think it is vital to note the role of politics here as well.

Not a single parent has filed a book challenge in Palm Beach in two years. The district just removed 1800 books anyway, because AI told them to. There are many reasons that is unthinkable but let's not forget AI DOES NOT HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOKS. IT CANNOT READ THEM. It just makes crap up!

Florida Freedom to Read Project@flfreedomread.bsky.social

Palm Beach pulled 1800+ titles from its school library collections because AI flagged them for review. Media specialists and principals must sign attestation forms verifying their libraries are compliant with vague law. None of this is normal. freedomtoreadproject.substack.com/p/when-ai-de...

Do you know how bad the abuse has to be for a judge to remove kids from their birth mother? Just saw Amy Acton’s CNN interview about that Ramaswamy ad and , listen, I lived in NC through the Willie Horton ad era. I’m not precious. This is so disgusting that I wish I believed in hell. I really do.

In 1811, James Monroe sent instructions to American representatives in France, where French authorities held James McClure because they believed he was a British enemy alien. Monroe: Affidavits show he was born in Charleston, and Justice William Johnson confirmed that was sufficient documentation.

SO excited when this program launched 🥳 Year 1 results were super encouraging. HAIL-like in magnitude 😍 And then... UT Austin leadership cancelled the program, ordering the fantastic UT research team to disband 😦 Despite formidable barriers, the team ensured the science got published 👏🏼💪🏽

I am in Cap Haitien interviewing people deported from the United States. I have been doing this kind of work for almost a decade and it literally does not get more dire than this. People have lost everything they built in the U.S. and are terrified and have no place to go or way to live.

#MedievalSky In case your students this week come in w/ questions about the Russian plague case currently in the news, you can tell them: 1) if this is plague (Yersinia pestis), there is nothing unusual about it (a) being in Russia or (b) being the subject of lab research. Plague is worldwide.
