>> He told me that his girlfriend asked him recently what he would have done if he’d been part of the Chi Phi group chat... >> He was ... honest and insightful in his reply. “I was thrown off by my internal response because immediately what I thought of was, well, am I still fraternity president?”

Another brilliant essay by Kate Manne. A lot of people want some shocking explanation for why fraternities perpetrate gang rapes. But we already know the answer because patriarchy (and its associated norms like "bro code") are everywhere. The familiarity is why it's so unsettling.

This was a great read. I went to undergrad just before smartphones so the dynamics were slightly different but the one thing that has remained the same is that male predators always seek each other out in the worst form of solidarity possible. How we handle that problem can and must change, now.

The “literacies“ framework is as intellectually bankrupt as polarization right now. We will keep using it because when you’ve got one hammer and the NSF social science funding has dried up everything looks like a nostalgic managerial class nail.

“… members of a fraternity posted vile things about her on social media… taking photos of her at her workplace on campus… She went to report it to CUPD at the encouragement of her boss... ‘They sent a male officer to take my statement. He informed me that I should be “flattered” by the posts’…”

In light of all the horrible sexual assault in the news, this from my conversation with Kate Manne in February at Princeton still sums up my thoughts. Power =\= Good Men(tm). Power = Power.

Cornell police edited Jane Doe's statement. Are we in pitchforks and torches territory yet? I think we are close. "As we now know, Cornell police also condensed down Doe's statement, omitting crucial details including the fact that she said she was 100 percent confident she’d been raped."

This is *the* piece. Kate Manne, professor of philosophy at Cornell, speaks truth to the totality of failures at the university — and why students protesting the war in Gaza have faced far harsher consequences than any of the Cornell 7: www.thecut.com/article/what...

“…what we need to demand from universities far and wide is clear: Cease to be a place where sexual assault is often subject to less punishment than protesting and plagiarism. Cease to be a place where the consequences for sexual-assault victims are often greater than for the perpetrators.”

Grinnell has a required writing class for first-year students. As part of the class, we have to teach about academic honesty and avoiding plagiarism. Easy enough, I thought, until I got the first student question: "Why does Grinnell seem to take this so much more seriously than it does Title IX?"

Apropos of Macklemore: a succinct description of how many women and non-white folks are dismissed, and white folks, especially white men, are not. This is why if you've got privilege, a platform, authority, it's so important that you take the risk and use your voice against injustice and harm.
