Fun finding from rereading David Underdown’s study of 1648-9: MPs from Yorkshire and the north east tended to be disproportionately supportive of the revolution and regicide compared to elsewhere.

On 18 September I'll be talking at the Oxford Levellers' Day, which celebrates two lesser-known martyrs to the cause, Privates Biggs and Piggen. There will be a talk and a gathering at Rewley House, Oxford. Do come along if you can. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-levell...

August 27th 1642, only 3 days after Charles raised his standard at Nottingham: the livery companies are instructed to lend 6000 muskets and 4000 pikes to Parliament 'for the defence and safety of this kingdome'. Only the trained bands were allowed to keep their arms. @jonathanhealey.bsky.social

I’m hoping Christopher Nolan writes a scathing review of Wilson’s next translation project, let’s get a real feud going. “Her clumsy and consistent flattening of the gnomic aorist into a bare preterite utterly fails to capture the nuance of the original!”

This petition needs as many signatories as the Exeter one. Please sign and share — don’t let Hertfordshire managers get away with this just because a Russell Group one took the spotlight. #UKHE

Shocking news about redundancies in the Humanities at the University of Hertfordshire, despite their exceptional research activities. I have signed the petition against these actions: it would be great if you would as well: c.org/kDQynZV7J4 @bbkhistorical.bsky.social @bisa-bkk.bsky.social

This is an embarrassing image for the UK. A self-respecting British fox should be dragging Binface's contents out over the stage

HUGE anniversary in Civil War history today... The 'Declaration' of Fairfax's army on 14 June 1647 calls for constitutional reform including regular elections, so ‘that the people may have an equal hope, or possibility, if they have made an ill choice at one time, to mend it in another’.

It also floats franchise reform ‘to render the parliament a more equal representative of the whole’, demands religious toleration for 'tender consciences', and reminds readers of what has been achieved by successful revolutions in Scotland, the Netherlands and Portugal.

I sort of agree about the word ‘trade’ and always try to avoid it, but Hilary Mantel’s jibe about book sales was silly. It ought to be possible to disagree about how we interpret the past without making it a pissing contest about market share.
