Every time I look for public domain images to use in a post online I think back on this conversation with @professormusgrave.bsky.social, about how the US (especially DoD's) vast public domain image production shapes how stories are told online athertonkd.substack.com/p/public-dom...

Our First Nations traditional territory maps are progressing. We're likely a week away from completing our alpha build. This will replace the Native-Land.ca territory maps, which went offline earlier this year (though they have other maps still online). It'll go online at knowledgekeepr.com

Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

This may be the thing I find the most frustrating about our current data/smart/digital/AI moment: so much of it doesn’t make a lick of economic sense. And that it might, maybe, perhaps be economically viable in 10 years isn’t a sensible justification for adopting it now.
Apart from data ownership, privacy, and ecological costs of digital farming, much of it doesn't even make business sense: "labour wages would need to rise above $140 per hour before autonomous machinery generates higher returns than conventional equipment" www.ft.com/content/aeb4...
1. Redmonton never stops being a funny poll projection 2. I will forever maintain that splitting Prince George 35/65 between two massive rural ridings is essentially gerrymandering for the Tories in northern BC. One small urban riding + one huge rural one would produce an actual competition.
Here's that Nanos poll mapped out Seats on this: LPC: 269 - (244-289) CON: 55 - (44-72) NDP: 12 - (7-17) BQ: 6 - (1-11) GPC: 1 - (0-2)

Feels like the phenomenon haunting every culture war narrative in the press is growing individual incomes and financial independence. A century ago most everyone would just have to grit their teeth and suffer their relatives/ partners as a matter of survival. This is no longer the case.
One thing you learn from reading the academic literature on parental estrangement is that it's rarely *just* about events from childhood. Most adults are willing to reconcile with their problematic parents as long as they can acknowledge their mistakes and own up to them. A lot of them refuse.

A very timely article from Wesley Wark, calling for a full accounting of foreign interference in the referendum campaign to be released as soon as possible after the vote. It is vital to fill this gap with hard evidence, rather than an incomplete picture with plenty of room for conspiracy theories.
“My first stop on my visit to a country that my president started a trade war with, rather than to the federal capital to apologize for my country’s hostility, was to the province about to face a separation referendum in part because said president and his aides are fomenting secession”. Go home.
My first stop was Alberta, the only province not boycotting Californian wines. I spoke to provincial leaders about the importance of the Canadian market to California farmers and the importance of continuing close collaboration on dairy, beef and energy trade.
