People having a lot of trouble understanding how Dems behave as a party don’t understand the Democratic Party. It’s not a party united by ideology—like the GOP mostly is—it’s a bunch of constituencies in a basic (democratic) bargain: votes for government programs that benefit them.

Hello I regret to inform you that this has not been true of philosophy since at least the 1960s Do you know when the first large scale generative algorithmic syndicated photo service debuted? The 1970s. Textual illusions aren’t meaningfully different from visual illusions.

I don't understand what is confusing about this. Until recently, you could look at computers and say "Look, they're nothing like us, they're calculators, we can complete many intellectual tasks they never could." Easy, practical distinction in capabilities. Now it's getting much harder to say that.

We do not apply this reasoning - that you are responsible when your enemy in a war decides to kill civilians (which is not just some, but most of the deaths totaled here) - to any other war. People have agency and are responsible for their choices, including groups and countries other than the USA.

Susan Collins is out here taking literal bribes for government contracts but you know what the real story is? gossip from a few salty Troy Jackson staffers! this is some axios-level nonsense. the only thing it’s missing is an “anonymous” quote from Josh Gottheimer complaining about progressives

Calling an ADAS lane assist feature “autopilot” is a clear case of consumer fraud and I’d love to see Tesla prosecuted for it.

e.w. niedermeyer@niedermeyer.online

investigating Elon Musk, subpoenaing him, making him testify under oath, and working toward significant prosecutions should be one of the leading Democrat campaign promises right now not just for DOGE, for a decade of self-driving fraud that has killed more than 60 Americans, and many other crimes

This is corruption of the highest order. Susan Collins delivered millions in taxpayer dollars for a corrupt donor bankrolling her campaign, and then Donald Trump helped her cover it up. No wonder she voted with him 96% of the time and has rubberstamped his agenda to hurt Maine.

ProPublica@propublica.org

NEW: In late 2024, FBI investigators had enough evidence to launch a sweeping bribery probe that could ensnare top lawmakers, including Sen. Susan Collins. Then Trump was reelected and eviscerated the FBI and DOJ teams handling public corruption probes.

"Do the reading" from a prof (or lecturer 🙃) is really "there are relevant ideas and information that you should know if you want to talk about this" not "shut up until you get a degree"

I keep an eye on Twitter to see what the far right are up to and to keep track of LA politics since local commentators, for whatever reason, still post about it there. But there is no “cultural conversation.” Musk is a straight up Nazi and the site is a fascist cesspool.

This is an amazing and powerful essay. What I am moved by is the number of people who are trying to do the right thing within a public school system that is hard to change.

if you are a Dem who for whatever reason does not feel comfortable actively defending trans rights (which you should) you have two good response options: 1. ignore it! just keep running ads about the economy 2. “I am focused on your pocketbook, my opponent is focused on children’s genitals”

Max Kennerly@maxkennerly.bsky.social

"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."

"My opponent wants to hire creeps to inspect your daughter's genitals if she wants to play soccer. I wouldn't trust him or any hired weirdo from his pedophile-protecting party alone in a room with any kid." Go on the offensive, you cowards! It's not that hard!

there's almost always some level of work politics based on 'go to this event, hang out with these people if you want to get ahead' and it's never great but it's how social dynamics work that gets a whole lot worse when the event you need to attend is a sex party

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

If you get why it’s bad when people feel *pressured* to attend sex parties and engage in other sexual behavior to advance professionally, then you understand the core problem with the rationalist AI Silicon Valley culture.

“AI” is a stupid category that is functionally meaningless and just denotes whatever computers someone loves or hates at the moment

A lot of people are Big Mad at me for saying that you should get off of Bluesky if you want to boycott AI in software development! You aren't even Luddites. All of y'all are a bunch of LARPers who will make special exceptions and excuses for the things you actually like.

To reiterate, "Only white people are capable of empire, slavery or atrocity" - that only white people can do the worst of sins - is itself still a form of white supremacism that imagines white people as the unique protagonists of history rather than recognizing that all people have agency.

This is fucking stupid. “Transgender ideology”? Fucking Ohio, man. If you’re going with weak sauce like Dirty Derek, & complaining about distractions, DON’T GET DISTRACTED BY HIS FRAMING

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Holy shit. Marcy Kaptur becomes the latest Dem to release an anti-trans ad, and its worse than all the rest combined. "I voted WITH Republicans to keep transgender ideology out of schools, and let me be clear, boys should NOT play in girls sports." This is getting out of control.

You want to push back? “I’m focused on affordability for Ohio families—but Dirty Derek wants to distract you. I already voted on for a bipartisan bill that solved this problem but Dirty Derek thinks Ohioans can’t stop thinking about children’s privates. Tell him to focus on the real issues.”

You don’t even have to be cute about it—I think boys shouldn’t play girls sports, which is why trans boys should play boys sports. Trans girls are girls. (I feel 0 need to have an opinion about hypothetical NB athletes)

This aligns with what Robert Evans has said on It Could Happen Here, that we could go a long way towards handicapping the Republican party by acting against car dealers (by allowing direct sales to consumers) as well as against MLMs and supplements.
