Unitarian Universalist Minister in Santa Barbara. Would like to post about the struggle to be human in a beautiful and heartbreaking world. But probably mostly politics. Also sometimes food and art.

Seems like this should be bigger news. But I say that a lot lately.

NEW: The DOGE operative who gutted USAID -- firing thousands of employees and canceling lifesaving programs -- never actually signed the paperwork that's legally required for him to be employed by the agency.

We here on the Central Coast are at the epicenter of this. We will not go quietly.

Student with disabilities, born in California, assaulted on his way to school in Santa Maria. He has limited verbal communication, had his ID in his pocket, and they tackled him, threw him into their vehicle, broke his wrist, and when they realized their mistake they just left him on the street.

That the first photo of Earth from space was only 80 years ago is amazing. The changes we have seen in 80 years are mind blowing.

1st photo of Earth from space, 80 years ago! On October 24, 1946, scientists launched a V-2 rocket carrying a movie camera to a height of 65 miles (105 km). That's past the Kármán line, the boundary of space, 62 miles up. Read more: buff.ly/wrB9F30 📸 Wikimedia Commons.

This week ICE agents tackled and injured Erik Zepeda, a special needs student on his way to class at Santa Maria High School in Santa Barbara County. After breaking his wrist, ICE agents left him on the road without medical care. His school had to call an ambulance to take him to the hospital.

He is a US citizen, born in California, and had his ID on him. Agents tackled him and broke his wrist before giving him the chance to show his ID. After the assault, he had to walk to his school to get help, and he had to have surgery on his wrist to repair the damage.

I know I've been on this bullshit before and I know this is an audience that largely agrees but I just have to yell at this particular cloud today: it is an absolute failure on the part of major news organizations that we have so little reporting on the president's physical and cognitive health.

Trump doesn’t care about the general public. His only concern is walling off public lands into private enclaves and business opportunities for himself and wealthy cronies.

It's probably better to think of Elon Musk as, first and foremost, a white nationalist billionaire who works to spread racism and elect Republicans and, secondly, as someone who likes to blow up rockets in his spare time.

We can still get 3k+ whistles out the door to people in need in under 24 hours and they are free.

People in California who are facing a terrible ICE surge: remember that if you need whistles, we are still sending them out for free. In fact, we just passed 1.7 million whistles sent out. linktr.ee/3Dwhistles

There is a hot debate on this issue here in Santa Barbara as a bunch of right wingers want to reopen a downtown pedestrian street to cars, mainly so they can fantasize about cruising like they did when they were young. It’s infuriating.

“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath 50 reasons for more walkable streets.

Latest WSJ poll: "63% want to pause AI development 61% want a billionaire wealth tax 59% want Medicare for All 57% want a $20 minimum wage 58% want to end U.S. military aid to Israel" This is the center of the country politically. it is time all adjust to this political spectrum, esp. media.

Yeah, it doesn’t seem like the NYT has given any coverage to the frat gang rape scandal at Cornell. Not as important as Oberlin’s banh mi or Harvard’s eating clubs I guess

I really hope people understand that stories like this are not anomalies or “mistakes.” They’re not the result of hospitals misunderstanding the law or legislative growing pains. This is simply what happens when you allow the government to interfere in pregnancy.

Civil engineers say it would be catastrophic to put a military target in the middle of an urban traffic circle. An AI video shared by Natalie Harp shows it would be super badass. For busy presidents planning triumphal arches, it can be hard to know who to trust.
