Sports are a foot in the door, intentionally so by the anti-trans organizations that push it. They know that if they can get you to accept an asterisk on who we are in one arena, they can get you to accept it everywhere.

The second the Democratic party starts accepting sports bans, I promise you, it will go on to do worse. And in fact we are already seeing it, some of the candidates also are opposing "trans surgery for youth." That easily becomes blockers and hormones, bathrooms and schools.

There are people, even some trans people, who think that we can give up sports to appease bigots. That if we give up on sports, this all goes away. That is a lie. I have reported on this for years, and EVERY state that passed a sports ban as a moderate compromise has gone on to pass worse.

The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

It’s interesting that they can always find the money when necessary. We just have to make it necessary

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

A lot of this shit is just relying on people getting only a vague impression of the news story of the day. The media made a lot of hay out of loose connections between the Supreme Court or the Executive and the edges of a major scandal, while largely ignoring that Bolsonaro is at the center of it.

And the dynamic here is exactly the same thing in miniature, (Jair) Bolsonaro's government basically halted corruption investigations and acted to protect a whole rogue's gallery of shady characters, and then when all this came to light in the next government, the scandal sticks to that government.

There was for a very long time and to some extent still is a perception in Brazil that during the military dictatorship that precede the current constitution, there wasn't endemic government corruption. And obviously there was, it's just that trying to report on it got you disappeared.

This is the same rhetorical trick that Brazilian media uses, where the fact that the federal police is investigating corruption that is then being prosecuted becomes a scandal "unfolding under [the president's] watch".
