Social media is not all bad and in fact there are many upsides for kids. My daughter suffered in lockdown but would have gone stark staring mad without SM. She used to have 4 or 5 friends online for hours while she was "at school" so it felt a bit more like real school. They chatted, joked, helped..

This was a key contributor to the War Graves Commission changing its policy on personal inscriptions on the headstone. And, more importantly, the decision to CHARGE, per-letter, for those inscriptions. That decision was controversal with some, but created a path to contributing for others.

For Beatrice, like many families, They could accept not having the body, and believed in the general principle of all war dead staying together. But it was about being able to pay in some way towards a funerary or memorial rite. A cultural and, for some, religious thing as much as personal.

Prince Maurice's grave is interesting, because it was a good example of the conflicting thoughts families had. Princess Beatrice refused repatriation of the body. She felt he belonged with his men. But she fought for years for the right to spend her own money on a custom headstone. This was blocked

Except bananas. Not saying "let them eat bananas" but that's the one product where inflation has basically been zero over the last few years which is related I think to a long-ago trade conflict

I've always believed Oxford Street could be so much more than a road. Today we begin a new chapter as the nation’s high street goes traffic free, creating a place where people can spend time, enjoy the atmosphere and experience the very best of our city.
