Reintroduction now that we're all determined to move here: I'm a playwright & theatre critic. I'd love to find more theatre nerds here! Big fan of Twin Peaks, Star Trek and film/TV in general. Recently holidayed in Canada with a side quest to Bangor, reigniting my love of Stephen King.

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

General wisdom: you get more conservative as you get older Me, in my early 50s: I'm getting ready to vote '1' Socialist for the first time

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

No, and this is upsetting. I like her work a lot. But there is no ethical use of this technology and in an industry where people are desperate for work, taking work away from animators is unjustifiable.

This is becoming a common pattern worldwide and if you're wondering it's because facism and patriarchy are twins.

Incredible gender difference in voting intention in Brazil.

Given that an American company, Meta, tried to influence the election in Brazil, I think it's important that the rest of the world knows this and is prepared for it to happen all over. Also it's important to be invested in left wing governments overcome fascists.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

I obviously knew Koenig wasn't hired until season two of TOS, but I didn't realise until today he was there to fill in for Sulu because Takei was off making a movie.

Oh, it was a reference to Anton Yelchin! I thought Matalas was making a stupid Anton Chekhov joke. No wait, he gets two references in one! What a guy.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

I love that this implies a hierarchy, where chicken flavoured chips and BBQ shapes are worth twenty times as much as salt and vinegar chips and cheese and bacon shapes.

I wrote about Suzie Miller’s novelisation of her play Inter Alia for Guardian Australia. Whatever the merits of the play, this is a very poorly written novel and I’m at a loss to understand why a serious artist would undercut their work in this way. www.theguardian.com/books/2026/o...

Scrolling through Skerritt's filmography and just putting together than Drew Barrymore was 17 years old when she made Poison Ivy and Tom Skerritt was 59.

Plays and novels are so different, I'm annoyed by this trend of writers thinking they can hop between them. Then again, publishers and theatre companies really love name recognition, so...

theguardian.comInter Alia by Suzie Miller review – an urgent play about rape and justice undermined by its novelisationBogged down by extra padding and a poorly crafted narrator, Miller’s book dilutes the potency of the original, and diminishes its scope Suzie Miller’s acclaimed 2019 play Prima Facie was a visceral exposé of the cruelty of due process in rape trials that has, on any analysis, been tremendously successful. It has been staged in more than 50 countries, won countless awards and been adapted into a film starring Cynthia Erivo; it has been used to educate judges and even resulted in changes to jury directions in rape trials, energising debate about better outcomes for survivors. Miller is a prolific playwright (her latest of more than 40 plays, Strong is the New Pretty is currently touring Australia), and Inter Alia, which premiered at London’s National Theatre in 2025, picks up themes that animated Prima Facie. The 2025 production starred Rosamund Pike as Jessica Parks: a feminist judge whose ethics are shaken when her 18-year-old son is accused of sexual assault. Pike gives a captivating performance of a desperate and disoriented woman working within a broken justice system. From the bench, Jessica has watched in dismay as defence lawyers exploit loopholes to keep their clients out of jail in rape trials. But when her son is accused, inconsistencies in the testimony of a traumatised victim give Jessica reason to hope he will be let off. Continue reading...
