Among the many many many reasons to vote, here's one to consider: Let's prove that billionaires can't buy an election. Let's prove it in a big way.

Dem voters aren't much better than MAGA at understanding cause & effect. Case in point; demanding Democrats prosecute & pass legislation to save America when 12 million Biden 2020 voters didn't bother to turn out to vote for Dems in '24. The time to stop what Trump is doing now was THEN.

Stop being "shocked" (it's a way to avoid facing hard facts) So is: "That's not who we are!" This shitshow's still going strong but only a tiny fraction of the people are OK with it.

Marc Elias@marcelias.bsky.social

If you are shocked this am that Trump’s government executed a search warrant against a Democratic Member of Congress and ignored a judge’s order then you haven’t been paying attention. Stop saying this isn’t how it works in the US. It is exactly how it works under Trump.

The Thomas Theorem explains: "If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences." Announcing Trump's indictments in 2023 enraged GOP voters. Trump didn't surge in the polls until then. He was re elected with A GOP trifecta - again. Not funny. Johnson knows this will work.

Ossoff is acting like Trump/MAGA/GOP and what they’ve done to the country is Actually Bad. Charismatic and well spoken, which sure helps. But no “my friends across the aisle,” no acting like the imaginary “Baileys” are the only ones who matter, no “don’t talk values, only kitchen table.” That’s it.

Bill McKibben@billmckibben.bsky.social

Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register

Big week over here: One year of Democracy Americana, one year as a full-time independent writer. I hope I’ll be able to convince enough people to become free subscribers or, better yet, paid members so that I can keep going. Here is my pitch to everyone who is interested:

Oh indeed they will, but it's your only problem a pardon can fix MAGA's future is not to live like gods on Mt Olympus. Your $benefactors$ will drop you all the instant it's politically advantageous. No more colonel's quarters on a military base. Maybe the Kirshners will rent you a tunnel on Sazan?

Hasan Piker, whom I do not support, should be getting more defense from the Democratic party, which he does not support, to unite the left for the best interests of America, which we do not support. by Glenn Greenwald

It's low class to dunk on and dog, granted. But it couldn't happen to more deserving people. I've spent my life forcing myself to feel sorry for broken losers like her - but now, they're just openly stealing my grandchildren's future, so fck them all.

We can see this in the ICE flight data. Domestic “round-up” flights are spiking, and some activist flight watchers report the flights are getting fuller. But deportation and removal flights remain steady. This means the concentration camps are getting packed to the brim. It’s awful to comprehend.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

ICE is engaged in a very large escalation nationwide, with the agency claiming to be hitting record arrest numbers amid the return of quotas. This has gotten very little attention from the media because ICE learned lessons from the chaotic disasters of Kristi Noem’s tenure. Keep a watch.

If you’re unwilling to read this piece before insisting you know what is going on with Justice Jackson, specifically regarding trans people, I’m sorry people are lying to you. And, if you don’t know me and just decided that I’m a cis guy who doesn’t care about trans people, that’s wrong and on you.

RFK Jr. says that HPV vaccine is “dangerous and defective”. A new study from England shows that HPV vaccines have reduced deaths from cervical cancer to ZERO for women aged 20-24. Significant reductions in older age groups were observed as well, though the latter have lower vaccination coverage.

Meet Crumb, Button, and Clover. A friend in the Bay Area found them behind a gas station. Unfortunately, she isn't able to keep them, so if she can't find someone to adopt them, they will be going to a shelter. Can you help me find them a home? They are in good health and very tame.

There’s this phenomenon among white middle class people during fascism that is entirely rooted in self-preservation. The reaction to others being targeted is not “how can I help this not happen to you/others?” But “if I ignore it & be good, it won’t happen to me.” Germans documented this thoroughly.
